NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 10 Sooners took a 1-0 lead in a Big 12 Conference series on Sunday against visiting Nebraska. OU built an early 6-1 lead and held off a late Husker rally in a 12-9 victory. The series was delayed two days after inclement weather hit the Norman area on Friday.

Ryan Duke recorded the final five outs of the game, three via a strikeout, for his fifth save of the season. The Sooners' closer entered the game with one out, a runner on first base, and a 9-7 lead. Nebraska plated two runs in the eighth before Duke entered game and scored two more in the ninth.

Despite scoring six runs in the final three frames, Nebraska (15-9-1, 3-4) came up short as OU improved to 22-5 and 3-1 in Big 12 play. The Sooners scored some late runs of their own with three in the bottom of the eighth. Aaron Baker doubled in two of those runs and helped put the game out of reach.

J.T. Wise paced the offensive attack with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with four RBIs as the Sooners tied the Huskers, 12-12, in the hit column.

Bryant Hernandez gave OU a 1-0 lead on a RBI double to left-center field. The extra-base hit extended his hitting streak to nine games and was followed by a walk issued to Aaron Baker. J.T. Wise extended the Sooners lead with a three-run shot that cleared the wall in left.

One inning after Wise connected for his eight long ball of the season, Cameron Seitzer cleared the left-field fence with a solo homer in the second inning. The home run marked the ninth time this season that OU has had multiple-homer games. The round tripper also helped erase the run Nebraska scored in the top half of the second on Nick Sullivan's solo shot.

Later in the second, Hernandez drove in his second run of the game on a single to right, plating Matt Harughty for the second consecutive frame. Hernandez, OU's team leader with 32 RBIs, finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs after driving in another run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Nebraska cut the Sooners' lead in half with two runs in the fourth inning. OU starter Andrew Doyle surrendered his second home run of the game as Jeff Tezak drove a 2-2 offering to left.

Another home run in the bottom of the sixth gave OU a 7-3 lead. Casey Johnson led off the inning with his fifth of the season and was the first of three Sooner runs in the sixth. Hernandez provided a sacrifice fly and Harughty brought in the other run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Doyle was chased out of the game in the seventh after giving up a solo home run to D.J. Belfonte and two more extra-base hits. J.R. Robinson came out of the bullpen and ended the rally. Doyle outlasted NU starter Casey Hauptman with 6 1/3 innings opposite five, and improved to 3-2 with four strikeouts.

Hauptman (2-1) received his first loss of the season with nine runs allowed, seven earned, off seven hits and a walk.

The series continues with game two at 5:10 p.m. The finale is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Monday.
