OU Ready for NCAA Title Meet

March 12, 2009 | Track and Field

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Eleven Oklahoma track and field athletes are here in preparation for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships set to begin tomorrow.

Jacob Boone, Shardae Boutte, Will Claye, Leslie Cole, Paul Gill, Scottesha Miller, Ti'Anca Mock and the men's distance medley relay all look to become OU's latest NCAA All-Americans, adding to the current total of 335. Thirty-four of the 335 have come in last three years under current head coach Martin Smith who is in his fourth year with the program.

Boone (mile), Boutte (triple jump), Claye (triple jump), Cole (400-meter dash), Mock (long jump) and the men's distance medley relay all eclipsed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard in their respective events to put their names in the championship while Miller (60- and 200-meter dash) and Gill (high jump), along with Claye in the long jump, earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks and were added as at-large competitors Monday night.

With six entries, the OU men's program has the seventh-highest total number of competitors in the nation and the third best in the Big 12. Also with Gill in the high jump, Claye in the long jump and Boutte and Claye in the triple jump, the Oklahoma men's jumps group under its coach Jeremy Fischer, is the only the program in the nation to have competitors in all three jumps fields.

The core of seven athletes and the one relay account for six top-10 national rankings entering the final weekend of the indoor season. Claye is tied with Boutte at No. 2 in the triple jump and is also ranked No. 8 in the long jump. Cole is ranked No. 2 in the 400 and Mock No. 8 in the long jump while Boone ranks No. 9 in the mile.

The only automatic qualifier not ranked in the top 10, the men's DMR quartet of Scott Cooper, Jarell Warren, Chris Sweeney and Boone, is ranked No. 12 with only two seconds separating No. 12 from No. 2 nationally. The four shattered the Oklahoma program record by 11 seconds at last weekend's Alex Wilson Invitational with a time of 9:31.38.

The DMR is one of four Oklahoma entries who set program records in 2009 as Boone, Cole and Mock each accomplished the feat in their respective events as well.

Miller was the final athlete added in both the 60 and 200, ranking 17th in each event. Gill enters the national high jump competition ranked No. 13 in the nation.

Action at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships kick off Friday morning at 10 a.m. inside the Gilliam Indoor Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University. OU action will begin at 4:15 p.m. with Claye in the long jump and Boone in the mile.
