NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 15 Oklahoma rattled off its eighth straight victory on Tuesday with a 6-0 win to complete a doubleheader sweep over Houston Baptist.
The Sooners improved to 15-3 with the win behind C.J. Blue's (2-0) first complete game shutout. OU has won 10 of the last 11 games while the Huskies dropped to 0-13.
Oklahoma has played 14 games in the past 15 days and posted a 11-3 record in that span heading into the final non-conference weekend of the season.
“This has been a challenging stretch and our players responded well,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “We don't like to make excuses and this winning streak is evident of that.”
Michael Rocha pitched his second career complete game in the first session of Tuesday's doubleheader as OU won 10-1, but Blue did one better. The senior pitched the first complete game of his career and blanked the Huskies for nine innings off six hits and zero walks. Blue tossed the longest outing of his career while striking out three batters.
“It felt great,” said C.J. Blue. “I don't think I have thrown a complete game shutout since high school and that was seven innings. So I think this is my first nine-inning complete game. I just let the defense do its work today and they always do a great job behind our pitchers.”
Blue received enough run support early to improve to 2-0 on the year. The Sooners plated six runs off 11 hits and produced 16 runs off 22 hits in the doubleheader. The offensive totals were over shadowed by two strong pitching performances that allowed zero earned runs and 11 hits on Tuesday.
Offensively, Jamie Johnson, Aaron Baker, Garrett Buechele, J.T. Wise and Matt Harughty led OU with two hits apiece.
Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after J.T. Wise hit a solo homer, his second of the day and fifth of the season.
The Sooners built a 3-0 lead in the third frame. The first run came across after catcher Johnathon Moore threw the ball away on a double steal by Harughty and Jamie Johnson. The errant throw allowed Harughty to score and Johnson came across on Bryant Hernandez' sacrifice fly.
In the fourth, OU tacked on another pair of runs and took a 5-0 lead. The Sooners started the frame with base hits by Elliott Blair, Harughty and Jamie Johnson. OU scored the first run on the Huskies' second error, a throw that went wide by third baseman Brian Franze, on Harughty's bunt single which scored Blair from second base after his leadoff double. Harughty, who reached third on the error, scored on Johnson's single to left field.
In the bottom of the eighth, Harughty padded his team-leading RBI total (22) with his second single of the game.
After Tuesday's doubleheader, Oklahoma travels to Tampa, Fla., this weekend to play in the USF Bulls Baseball Classic. OU will begin the tournament on Friday with Bethune Cookman on the South Florida campus. On Saturday, the Sooners will play the host Bulls before concluding the weekend with Eastern Illinois on Sunday.
