NORMAN, Okla. -- Senior gymnast Russell Czeschin was OU's recipient of the Chick-Fil-A Community of Champions Award, presented by the Big 12 Conference, for the winter term.
Czeschin, a 2008 All-American on floor, has volunteered at Cleveland Elementary School, reading to students weekly, as well as participating in events such a Halloween Day and Jog-a-Thon. A health and exercise science major, Czeschin was recently named to the 2008 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Chick-Fil-A and the Big 12 recognize 36 student-athletes each year (three from each Big 12 school) for their outstanding contributions to community efforts. During the fall, winter and spring terms, one student-athlete from each institution is honored based on academics, community service, and leadership.
Along with the award, Chick-Fil-A makes another donation to the general scholarship fund of every Big 12 institution for supporting community involvement amongst its student-athletes.
Oklahoma returns to team action on Feb. 21 against Iowa. The meet will get underway at 7 p.m. at the Howard McCasland Field House.
The Sooners' meet with the Hawkeyes marks "Cleveland Elementary Night." Students, parents and teachers will pack the Howard McCasland Field House as the annual event is part of a "Partners in Education" program with Cleveland Elementary.
