SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 16 OU baseball team found themselves behind 2-0 to No. 11 San Diego after the fourth inning on Tuesday at Cunningham Stadium, but rallied with 11 unanswered runs en route to an 11-2 victory.
Jamie Johnson's grand slam in the fifth inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Sooners improved to 5-0 on the season and dropped the Toreros to 2-2.
“I thought we played well,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Defensively, I thought we were pretty focused and offensively, we were pretty good once we got going. You have to tip your cap (to San Diego), we are going to see good pitching and we have good pitching.”
The Toreros opened the first inning with a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to left. The run was made possible after the leadoff hitter, Kevin Muno, singled but then advanced to second on a failed pickoff. San Diego built a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a double play ground out by Steven Chatwood.
OU opened the game up in the fifth inning. Jamie Johnson and the Sooners answered in a big way in the top half of the frame and chased USD starter Darrin Campbell out of the game. Johnson hit his first career grand slam and quickly put an end to Campbell's one hitter.
Johnson was previously 0-for-6 in that situation and capitalized in his first attempt of the year. Prior to the four-run shot, Bryant Hernandez and Garrett Buechele both singled before Elliott Blair loaded the bases on a sacrifice fielder's choice.
The big inning continued as Matt Harughty singled after Johnson's second homer of the year. Aaron Baker followed with a walk before Casey Johnson's sacrifice bunt was fielded errantly by USD third baseman VIctor Sanchez. With the bases loaded for the second time in the inning, OU connected again this time off J.T. Wise's RBI single. Ross Hubbard drove in the sixth run of the inning on a single to right and Hernandez concluded the frame with a RBI on a fielder's choice.
OU finished the fifth with seven runs on six hits and batted around the order for the fourth time this season. In addition, the seven runs marked the fifth time this season that OU has scored five or more runs in an inning.
Leading 7-2, the Sooners added two more runs to give OU starter J.R. Robinson extra insurance. Robinson retired the side in the bottom of the fifth and Baker and Casey Johnson each drove in runs in the top of the sixth.
Robinson finished his first career start as a Sooner with six innings under his belt and two runs allowed, one of which was earned. The southpaw struck out three and allowed seven hits and zero walks before giving way to Chase Anderson and Ryan Duke. Anderson surrendered two hits over two innings and struck out two batters, while Duke finished the ninth with one hit and one strikeout.
OU tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth with back-to-back doubles by Hernandez and Buechele. The extra base hit by Buechele drove in the final two scores and capped off the 11-2 victory. Buechele was one of three Sooners to finish with multiple hits, and ended the contest with a career-best three hits. Hernandez extended his hitting streak to six games (dating back to last season) with a 2-for-5 day and Jamie Johnson led the way with three hits, two runs and four RBIs.
