NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 University of Oklahoma baseball team (3-0) built an 8-1 lead after three innings during game two of the doubleheader on Saturday against Western Illinois (0-3) and never looked back to claim a 15-4 run rule victory.
The win was the third straight for the Sooners and the second of the day as they swept the doubleheader with the Leathernecks. OU won game one over Western Illinois, 6-1, and leads the series 3-0 after outscoring the opposition, 38-7.
“I was very pleased our pitching performances in both games today,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. “And they were able to settle in with the offense providing plenty of run support.”
For the second straight game, OU trailed early as Western Illinois plated a run in the first inning on starter C.J. Blue, but the Sooners quickly countered and built a seven-run lead after the bottom of the third. The key hit in that span came off the bat of Matt Harughty, who hit his third career home run in the second inning, but the first grand slam during his time as a Sooner.
That was all Blue needed to improve to 1-0 on the season as the left-hander tossed five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits but did not surrender a walk and blanked the Leathernecks in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.
Harughty led all hitters in the game and tied a career high with three hits and topped another previous best with five RBIs. The Sooners out hit the Leathernecks 10-9 and handed Chris Fuchs (0-1) the loss after he gave up eight runs off seven hits in three innings of action.
The Sooner bullpen closed out the game for Blue and did not allow a run for the third straight game as Trey Sperring and Kaleb Herren each pitched an inning of spotless relief.
The Leatherneck relievers were not as lucky as they were tagged for seven more runs in the final two frames. After a scoreless fourth inning, Oklahoma batted around the lineup in the fifth as Harughty, Aaron Baker, Ross Hubbard and Tyson Seng all brought in runs.
During the Sooners' final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth, Tyler Ogle gave OU the 15-4 lead with a two-run double.
Offensively, Bryant Hernandez and Garrett Buechele joined Harughty with multiple-hit performances as they both finished 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored.
Oklahoma will look for the four-game sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. as Garrett Richards takes the mound for the Sooners.
