IRVING, Texas - University of Oklahoma gymnast Kristin Smith was named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday. Smith's honor marked the third straight weekly conference award by an OU gymnast.
Fellow Oklahoma gymnast Ashley Jackson was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 10, while sophomore Melanie Root took home co-Event Specialist of the Week honors a week prior.
Smith guided the 11th-ranked Sooners to a 196.125-194.825 victory at No. 22 Denver on Feb. 14, winning the beam title with a season-high 9.9 and a share of the floor crown with teammate Jackie Flanery (9.85). It marked the first time the Oklahoma City, Okla., native has captured multiple titles in her collegiate career.
The Sooners return to the friendly confines of the Lloyd Noble Center on Friday, Feb. 20, hosting Big 12-foe Missouri, Brown and West Virginia in a quad meet slated to start at 7 p.m. (CT).
The meet will also feature the reigning Big 12 Gymnast of the Week in Sarah Shire of Mizzou. Shire won four individual titles last week, including her fifth all-around crown, to lead No. 13 Missouri to a 196.625-195.00 win over No. 17 Illinois. The sophomore posted a career-high 39.525 all-around mark and tied her career bests on beam and floor with a pair of 9.925s. Shire also won vault with a 9.875.
