DENVER — The No. 8 OU women's gymnastics squad swept all four individual event titles (three outright), while snagging three team event honors, en route to a 196.025-194.825 victory at 22nd-ranked Denver on Saturday night in front 1,337 fans inside Hamilton Gymnasium.
Kristin Smith won the beam title (9.9), while sharing top honors on floor (9.85) with teammate Jackie Flanery (Denver's Amanda Johanson tied the Sooner duo on floor). Flanery made sure Smith wasn't the only one to walk away with a pair of honors for the Sooners (3-3), sharing the vault title with freshman Sara Stone (9.85). Hollie Vise capped off the Sooner sweep with the bars title after a career-best-tying 9.9.
“I thought we were kind of in survival mode all night,” said OU head coach K.J. Kindler. “We had some perform their best routines of the season, while some had a few of their weakest and in the end it balanced out to a 196. We definitely had a few bright spots, while the errors we did make are easily correctable and changing those can get us from a hot-and-cold night to the next level.”
Oklahoma opened the meet on bars, hitting six-of-six routines en route to a 49.075 on the apparatus. The Sooners were paced by Vises's 9.9 from the anchor position. Oklahoma also counted a personal-best-tying 9.85 from Jessica Kinder (her second-straight 9.85 on bars after winning the event title at Nebraska last Sunday) and a pair of 9.8s from Megan Ferguson and Ashley Jackson. OU took an early lead as the Pioneers scored a 48.850 on vault, behind a 9.825 from Kelley Hennigan.
The Sooners scored their second-straight 49-plus event score with a 49.025 on vault in the second rotation. OU received a pair of event-winning 9.85s from Flanery (tied a career high) and Sara Stone. Melanie Root added a 9.8, while DeProspero (9.775) and Kinder (9.75) rounded out the Oklahoma rotation.
Smith and Flanery both posted 9.85s in their event win on floor as OU increased its lead to 147.000-145.850 with one event to go. The Sooners tallied a 9.825 from Jackson and rounded out the event with a 9.75 from Kinder and a 9.625 in Ferguson's return to the floor lineup.
The Sooners closed with a 49.025 on beam, capped by Smith's second-straight event win (9.9). OU opened and closed the rotation with 9.825s from Jackson and DeProspero, while counting a 9.775 from Vise and a 9.7 from Natalie Ratcliff. Denver closed with a 48.975 on floor to prevent the Oklahoma team title sweep.
OU returns to the friendly confines of the Lloyd Noble Center on Feb. 20, hosting Big 12-foe Missouri, Brown and West Virginia in a quad meet slated to start at 7 p.m. (CT). It's the Sooners “Flip for a Cause” meet in promoting Heart Health Awareness and the Go Red for Women campaign. There will be free Red Dress Pins for the first 1,000 fans and the first 500 fans dressed in red or crimson will get an “I Love Oklahoma Gymnastics” t-shirt. Tickets for the event can be purchased through the OU Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU.
