NORMAN, Okla. – The back-to-back Big 12 Champion OU women's gymnastics squad debuted at No. 9 in the GymInfo preseason coaches poll released this week, the highest ranking of any conference squad.
The Sooners return 11 members from last season's group that clinched OU's second straight conference title and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the sixth consecutive year. Oklahoma is one of just six squads to advance to the NCAA Championships every year since 2004, joining Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Utah.
OU's 2010 preseason ranking is a spot higher than last season when the Sooners opened the season ranked 10th.
Nebraska (15th) and Missouri (16th) and Iowa State (23rd) rounded out the Big 12 squads in the preseason poll.
Georgia, winner of the last five national titles, opens the 2010 season as the nation's top team under first-year head coach Jay Clark. The Gym Dogs earned 13 of a possible 31 first-place votes and accumulated 21 more total points than No. 2 Utah (six first-place votes). Alabama (eight first-place votes), Florida (two first-place votes) and UCLA (two first-place votes) round out the top five.
Nebraska (11th) and Missouri (19th) were the only other Big 12 squads ranked in the preseason poll.
OU's regular season schedule features regular season events against nine teams ranked in the preseason GymInfo top-25 poll and commences Jan. 8 at home against Florida, a Super Six qualifier at last year's NCAA Championships.
