LONDON – OU junior Steven Legendre, 2009 NCAA all-around, floor and vault National Champion finished eighth in the event finals on the floor exercise with a score of 14.950 at the 2009 World Championships in London, Great Britain.
“It definitely was a learning experience for me. You don't experience this anywhere else,” said Legendre. “This stage is the biggest one I've been on so far. It was a lot of fun and exciting. It is motivating to me to be here and watch best people in the world.”
Legendre is competing in his first World Championships and qualified for the finals by scoring a 15.475 on the first day.
“It was a great experience for Steve to be in a World Championships finals at his first Worlds,” said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. “He has another international meet coming up in December and then the NCAA season begins in January and with every experience with USA he will get better.”
The World Championships will conclude this weekend with Horton competing Sunday on high bar.
Horton made his debut at the 2007 World Championships and finished fourth in the all-around at Stuttgart, Germany. He became the fourth American gymnast to finish in the top-four at Worlds.
The expected field features 73 countries and a total of 457 gymnasts, with more than 1,200 athletes, coaches and officials. According to the official Web site, the countries sending the maximum number of athletes (six men and four women) are: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland and USA.
