NORMAN, Okla. -- The 2009 World Championships for men's gymnastics gets underway on Oct. 13 and half of Team USA will be represented by the Sooner program.  Current OU gymnasts Jake Dalton and Steven Legendre and former Sooner Jonathan Horton will compete in London, England through Oct. 19.

Head Coach Mark Williams has coached seven Oklahoma gymnasts that have competed internationally as a part of Team USA in the past seven years.

"It is pretty impressive to have half of the team be Sooners," said Williams. "I think it's a statement that not only is our program developing NCAA champions but we are also trying to take them to the international competitions."

Dalton, a native of Sparks, Nev., earned his spot after performances at the recent training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

At this year's Visa Championships, Horton won the all-around, finishing first on rings and high bar, while Legendre finished seventh in the all-around with the floor title. Dalton finished tied for 14th and posted a score of 32.700 to tally the highest score on vault in the second day.

While Horton's success with Team USA is well known, Legendre has enjoyed success over the past year as well.  A five-time individual NCAA national champion, Legendre competed with some of the world's best at the 2009 Japan Cup and placed third on vault.

"I think that Jon has a good chance to medal in the all-around and on high bar," added Williams. "Steven is on floor and Jake is on vault and this puts them in a good place to compete towards the 2012 Olympics."

The U.S. Men's Team: Jake Dalton of University of Oklahoma; Wesley Haagensen of Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Olympic Training Center; Jonathan Horton of Houston/Cypress Gymnastics; Steven Legendre of Oklahoma; Danell Leyva of Miami/Universal Gymnastics; and Tim McNeill of University of California - Berkeley.

Tom Meadows will also be represting OU at the World Championships as Horton's coach from Cypress Gymnastics. Meadows was a gymnast at Oklahoma from 1991-1993.

London 2009 will start with the Qualification round (Competition 1) which will outline the top 24 Men and Women who will proceed to the Individual All-around Finals (Competition 2). The top eight competitors on each piece of the 6 apparatus for men and 4 apparatus for women, will make a challenge for the medals in the Apparatus Finals (Competition 3). No scores from the Qualification round are carried over to the Finals. A maximum of two gymnasts per country may advance to the finals.

The expected field features 73 countries and a total of 457 gymnasts, with more than 1,200 athletes, coaches and officials.  According to the official Web site, the countries sending the maximum number of athletes (six men and four women) are: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland and USA.

USA Gymnastics' Web site, www.usa-gymnastics.org, will have results and a variety of information on the U.S. Team's efforts in London.
