Gameday
Blog | Return to Current Blog |
10:14 p.m. | Home Cooking
With tonight's win, Oklahoma extended the nation's
longest current home winning streak to 21 games. Wisconsin
is next with 16, while three teams are tied with 15
(Boise State, BYU and Kansas).
9:32 p.m. | This One's in the Books
It's official -- OU 35, TCU 10. We'll have the recap
of tonight's game up shortly with stats, photos and
highlights as soon as possible.
9:27 p.m. | Heupel Has Company
Sam Bradford is only the second quarterback to throw
for over 400 yards in a game. Current OU quarterbacks
coach Josh Heupel accomplished the feat twice in 1999
(Louisville - 429, Baylor - 420).
9:18 p.m. | More on Manny's Big Night
Manny Johnson became the second OU player to record
three touchdowns of 55 yards or more in a single contest,
joining Antonio Perkins, who broke an NCAA record against
UCLA in 2003 with punt return TDs of 84, 74 and 65
yards. As noted earlier in the blog, Perkins is one
of the former players in attendance tonight.
9:12 p.m. | Offense Having Their Way
with TCU
Before tonight's game, only one TCU opponent had cracked
the 200-yard mark in total offense in 2008 (SMU, 210).
OU receiver Manny Johnson has almost single-handedly
eclipsed that total, while the Sooners have nearly
doubled that number as a team with 404 yards of total
offense.
9:05 p.m. | Sooners Provide Plenty
of Big Hits
SoonerVision just played our favorite feature on the
video board, the MidFirst Big Hits. Some of tonight's
highlights included Nic Harris forced fumble, Cory
Bennett's hit on TCU's running back and Quinton Carter's
blow on the kickoff return. Look for the video on
this
page early next week.
8:59 p.m. | 59th Consecutive Sellout
for Sooners
OU just announced attendance of 85,158 for tonight's
game against TCU. It's the 59th consecutive sellout
at Owen Field (every game of Coach Stoops' tenure)
and the 33rd consecutive game Oklahoma has exceeded
the listed capacity of 82,112.
8:55 p.m. | Travis Lewis with
Latest Technology
OU football equipment director Brad Camp just told
us that redshirt freshman linebacker Travis Lewis is
sporting a Riddell Revolution Speed helmet. OU is one
of only 16 schools in the country to test out the new
helmet which utilizes the latest technology while maintaining
a traditional look.
8:49 p.m. | O.K. Oklahoma
A few fans have
emailed
us asking for the name of the song the Pride plays
after the Sooners kick an extra point and the Schooner
rolls out on the field. It's
O.K. Oklahoma and
it has an interesting back story. The song premiered
in a live broadcast on December 1, 1939. For more background
on the song and to listen to the 1939 premiere of the
arrangement,
go
here.
8:42 p.m. | Manny Sets School
Record
No small feat, Manny Johnson just set an Oklahoma record
for receiving yards in a game. He is the first player
in OU history to eclipse 200 receiving yards in a contest.
8:34 p.m. | Manny Having Career
Night
Manny Johnson just ripped off his third long-TD reception
of the night. That's 206 yards on five receptions with
three scores. By our count, Johnson has set three career
highs tonight: receiving yards, TD receptions and career-long
reception.
8:29 p.m. | Strong Defensive
Effort
The OU defense limited TCU to a lone first-half field
goal after shutting out Washington in the first half
on September 13. The last time the Sooner defense went
consecutive games without allowing a first-half TD
was in 2006.
8:25 p.m. | Former Sooner
Gets Nice Win
Nice win for former Sooner assistant coach Kevin Sumlin
earlier today. Houston notched a 41-24 victory against
No. 23 East Carolina in Greenville, N.C.
8:15 p.m. | Manny Produces
Big Half
Manny Johnson racked up 131 yards on just two catches
in the first half. His 131 receiving yards in the opening
half is tied for fifth-most all-time in OU history.
Mark Clayton leads the category with 166 yards on seven
receptions against Texas A&M in 2003.
8:08 p.m. | Tisdale Addresses
Fans
OU basketball great Wayman Tisdale just addressed the
fans at Owen Field via a video on the SoonerVision
board. Fans can email encouraging words to Tisdale
at
fanmail@tisway.com.
Here's some
background on
Tisdale and his challenge.
8:06 p.m. | Slingin' Sam
Latest note from OU Athletics Media Relations: Bradford's
281 yards passing in the first half is the fourth-most
all-time in a half among OU quarterbacks.
7:55 p.m. | Halftime in Norman
The teams head to the locker room with the Sooners
up, 28-3. TCU's band takes the field first to be followed
by the Pride. OU just recognized the Big 12 champion
women's gymnastics team and track champions Latoya
Greaves and Shardae Boutte.
7:51 p.m. | Carter's Special
Delivery
Quinton Carter's jarring hit on the TCU kick returner
elicited a huge response from the crowd.
7:48 p.m. | Just Manny Being Manny
Another long touchdown strike from Sam Bradford to
Manny Johnson. We'll have more numbers for you in a
few minutes...
7:43 p.m. | B.J. Filling Up Stat Sheet
Too
Junior cornerback Brian Jackson's second-quarter interception
was his third takeaway in the last two contests. Jackson
forced two fumbles in OU's 55-14 win at Washington.
7:37 p.m. | Sack Attack
With Cory Bennett's latest sack, OU's defensive tackles
continue to show they are more than just run stuffers.
OU's four-man defensive tackle rotation now has a combined
total of 15.0 career sacks, which also includes Gerald
McCoy's tally from earlier in the night.
7:33 p.m. | Thunder at Memorial Stadium
No, not another storm rolling in... We were just informed
by a member of the OU marketing staff that players
from Oklahoma City's new NBA team taking in the game
from the sideline.
7:29 p.m. | King of the Gridiron
Former Sooner and current Chicago Bears defensive tackle
Tommie Harris was featured in tonight's Jani-King "Kings
of the Gridiron" video on the big board.
Click
here for a complete archive of the Kings of the
Gridiron, and look for the Harris feature early next
week.
7:25 p.m. | Another Note from the
Press Box
Media relations grad assistant Philip Rogers passed
along another great note: Bradford's 199 first-quarter
passing yards set an OU record for passing yards in
the opening quarter.
7:20 p.m. | Holmes Turnover Feast
Lendy Holmes just recovered his second fumble of the
game, this one forced by linebacker Keenan Clayton.
It is the fourth turnover this season Holmes has had
a hand in. In addition to tonight's two fumble recoveries,
he also has a forced fumble and an interception.
7:13 p.m. | OU's Big Play Habit
An impressive note from OU's media relations staff
up in the press box: With Sam Bradford's 76-yard touchdown
strike to Manny Johnson in the waning parts of the
first quarter, three of the last 18 Bradford passes
have been for TD strikes of 60 yards or longer.
7:07 p.m. | Sooner Salute
Oklahoma recognized a long-time season ticket holder
from OU and TCU in the Sooner Salute presented by U.S.
Army. Sooner fan Kenneth Hall has been attending OU
games for nearly 50 years. OU also recognized a TCU
fan who has had Frogs season tickets since 1961. Another
classy move you don't see at many other schools.
7:03 p.m. | Speaking of Great Kicks
How about senior Mike Knall's punt, a beauty which
he angled out of bounds just inside the one-yard line.
6:59 p.m. | Great Kick!
One lucky Sooner fan wearing a No. 7 DeMarco Murray
jersey just won $1,000 by making a field goal as part
of a promotion sponsored by
Marc
Heitz between the first and second quarters.
6:57 p.m. | It's Heating Up
The offense heads right back to work after a pair of
seniors teamed up to take the ball away from the Frogs.
Nic Harris forced the fumble, which was recovered by
Lendy Holmes.
6:53 p.m. | Let 'Er Fly
Hopefully we didn't speak too soon on the last note...
But, TCU has shown no signs of being able to stop Oklahoma
through the air, as Bradford just connected with Manny
Johnson for a 76-yard scoring strike. It's OU's second-longest
TD of the year, while Bradford matched his jersey number
with TD pass No. 14. OU 21, TCU 3.
6:49 p.m. | Establishing the Run
TCU entered the game leading the nation in run defense
at 32.5 yards per game. With just under two minutes
remaining in the first quarter, the Sooners have made
a point of establishing the run and already have surpassed
that total with 37 rushing yards on the board.
6:43 p.m. | Observations from the Sideline
We thought we sighted some purple right behind the
OU bench. As it turns out, just a Vikings Adrian Peterson
jersey... SoonerVision showed a sign in the Oklahoma
student section: "Frog Legs Taste Great"... A few former
Sooners we found roaming the sidelines tonight: Roy
Williams, Jacob Gutierrez, Antonio Perkins, Lewis Baker,
Dane Zaslaw, Renaldo Works and Paul Thompson.
6:36 p.m. | Offense Rolling
OU's offense continues its feverish pace with its second
touchdown in as many drives to start the game. This
time, the Sooners went right at the heart of the TCU
defense, with Chris Brown plunging in from one yard
out. Brown has found the end zone more than any other
Sooner so far this year, with his fifth touchdown of
the season.
6:31 p.m. | Another Packed House
After settling down from the first few minutes of the
game, we want to throw a shout out to the crowd, as
there are very few empty seats to be found in Memorial
Stadium. We anticipate the announced crowd will exceed
capacity for the 33rd consecutive game and mark OU's
59th consecutive sellout dating back to Coach Stoops'
first game in Norman. Thanks again Sooner fans!
6:19 p.m. | McCoy Welcomes TCU Quarterback
Gerald McCoy sacked TCU quarterback Andy Dalton on
the Horned Frogs' first play of the game. Second play,
McCoy chased him again. Sooner defense holds TCU to
field goal.
6:15 p.m. | Sooners Early with Fireworks
Sam Bradford hit senior receiver Jauquin Iglesias in
the end zone on a 24-yard strike for Oklahoma's first
touchdown. This followed the call-back of an apparent
touchdown to Jermaine Gresham due to a holding call.
Fireworks in the air over Norman. Sooners 7, TCU 0.
Iglesias just extended his consecutive games with a
reception to 36. It was Bradford's 13th TD pass of
the season.
6:11 p.m. | Let's Rumble
TCU just kicked off to the Sooners and we're underway
in Norman. Oklahoma comes out running the ball. Watch
live stats during the game here.
6:06 p.m. | There's Only One Oklahoma
Coach Stoops gets the honors of the final line in tonight's
team intro video. The capacity crowd erupted and James
Garner just said "This is Oklahoma Football!" The Sooners
raced onto the field and the crowd is yelling Boomer
Sooner back and forth. Sooner fans are in full throat.
6:03 p.m. | OU Celebrates Stoops at 100
SoonerVision just ran a nice piece celebrating Coach
Stoops' 100th victory at Oklahoma. Stoops notched the
mark when OU beat Washington in Seattle on September
13. Oklahoma became the first (and only) program in
NCAA history to have
four
head coaches with 100 or more wins (Bennie Owen,
Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer and Stoops).
5:59 p.m. | Schooner Takes Lap Around Field
The Sooner Schooner just made its traditional lap around
Owen Field. Instantly recognizable to fans everywhere
that the Sooners are about to take the field.
5:55 p.m. | Sooner Fans Welcome Guests from
TCU
The University of Oklahoma just welcomed the Horned
Frogs to Owen Field and allowed the TCU band to serenade
its fans. Again, a classy move by Oklahoma. Haven't
seen that gesture performed anywhere else but here
in Norman.
5:50 p.m. | Pride of Oklahoma on Field
The University of Oklahoma proudly presents the Priiiiiiide
of Ooooooklahoma! Here comes the band!
5:49 p.m. | Sooners Group at Midfield
The OU team just wrapped up its pre-game warmups and
covered the logo at midfield. The crowd gave the team
a rousing sendoff. Sounds like the fans are ready to
get this started. Not long now...
5:43 p.m. | TCU Heads Off Field
The Horned Frogs just completed their pre-game warmups
and headed for the southwest ramp to the visitor locker
room at Owen Field. TCU fans flanking the south end
zone cheered the team off the field. Most of the stadium
is already filled with crimson.
5:37 p.m. | It's Football Time in Oklahoma!
Public address announcer Jim Miller just recited his
signature line which received the usual enthusiastic
response from the OU faithful.
5:34 p.m. | TCU Mascot Trivia
A trivia question on the video board pre-empted a post
we were planning to put up here. Scientifically speaking,
TCU's mascot is
actually
a lizard, not a frog. The more popular "horned
frog" moniker comes from the lizard's rounded body
and blunt snout. Just a bit of useless information
you may or may not have cared to know.
5:22 p.m. | Student Section Fills Up Quick
The OU students filed in early in anticipation of tonight's
game. Still more than 40 minutes from kickoff, all
of sections 27-30, the prime seats in the Oklahoma
student section, are completely full.
5:13 p.m. | Special Teams Warming Up
Both Oklahoma's and TCU's special teams units are warming
up on the field. As the Horned Frog players first entered
the field, TCU band members held up a sign: "Give 'Em
Hell TCU".
4:52 p.m. | TCU Brings Big Band
TCU's band just filed onto Owen Field headed for their
seats in the southeast corner of the stadium. It appears
most everyone made the trip up I-35. Doesn't look like
the Pride will have to play TCU's fight song for their
fans during the pre-game. Nonetheless, that OU tradition
has to be one of the classier moves in college football.
4:42 p.m. | Women's Hoops at Fan Fest
OU women's basketball sports information director Jared
Thompson checks in with a photo gallery of the team
at Fan Fest handing out OU towels and hats to fans
who could make free throws. The Sooners also autographed
their new poster for the 2008-09 season for fans at
the pre-game event just north of the stadium.

3:46 p.m. | More Big 12 Teams in Action
Around the Big 12: Texas A&M survived Army, 21-17,
in College Station (wonder if there was some precision
drilling by the bands at halftime?), Colorado and Florida
State are tied, 7-7, in Tallahassee, K-State is up
21-3 on La-Lafayette and Texas is beating Arkansas,
24-3. See all the Big 12 action

3:05 p.m. | No. 4 Florida Goes Down
Ole Miss stopped Tim Tebow and the Gators on a fourth-and-one
to preserve a
31-30
upset of Florida in Gainesville. So far, the No.
1 and No. 4 teams have lost to unranked opponents this
weekend. No. 3 Georgia hosts No. 8 Alabama at Sanford
Stadium at 6:45 on ESPN. Check national scores
here.
2:23 p.m. | No. 4 Florida in Fight with Ole
Miss

12 scoreboard...

11:42 a.m. | Kirk Herbstreit on OU vs. TCU
Kirk Herbstreit and the ESPN College Gameday crew are
in Athens for the Alabama-Georgia game. Herbstreit
says this about the OU-TCU game: "There's two things
that hurt TCU in my mind in this game. No. 1: the fact
that USC lost on Thursday night gives the Sooners every
bit of incentive to take TCU seriously and to try to
be impressive to try and move up to that top spot..."

11:31 a.m. | Prediction for the Game
A prediction on the game from Whatif Sports: "Oklahoma
may be the most talented team in the country. With
eight of its nine remaining games against teams in
our top 35 (not to mention a possible Big 12 Championship
game versus a team like #4 Missouri), the Sooners will
have ample
opportunity to
prove that fact this season."
8:13 a.m. | ESPN to Feature Bradford
Be sure to catch ESPN's feature on Sam Bradford on
Saturday. Desmond Howard was in Norman Wednesday filming
a piece against the backdrop of Bradford's favorite
hobby, golf. The segment will air during ESPN's College
Gameday show between 9-11 a.m. CT.
8:03 a.m. | Iglesias on Team's Maturity
Tim Griffin of ESPN provides an interesting quote from
senior receiver Juaquin Iglesias: "There's no doubt
that this is the most mature team I've ever played
on. We're more settled and realize what we need to
keep doing. It's not something that you can see, but
you can just sense being around this group."

going to try to beat Oklahoma: The Frogs lead the country
averaging more than 37 minutes in
time
of possession."
