Oklahoma Ranked No. 1 in Polls

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma moved up to No. 1 in the latest polls released
Sunday afternoon. In both the AP and coaches polls, the Sooners (4-0) rose one spot after defeating then-No. 23 TCU on Saturday night at Owen Field, 35-10.
Oklahoma was rated No. 1 in the AP poll with 43 of 65 possible first-place votes. No. 2 Alabama had 21 first-place votes with No. 4 Missouri awarded one top vote. The latest No. 1 ranking breaks a tie with Notre Dame in AP poll history. The Sooners have now been ranked No. 1 in the nation more times than any other team, 96 weeks. The Irish have been the top team for 95 weeks.
In more than one-third of the AP polls (36%), Oklahoma has been ranked in the top five. No team in college football history has been ranked more times in the AP top five than Oklahoma.

Six Big 12 teams were ranked in the latest coaches poll. The Sooners received 57 of 61 possible first-place votes. After No. 1 Oklahoma, Missouri was No. 3 -- missing the No. 2 ranking by just one point. The Tigers garnered 1,398 votes while LSU has 1,399. Texas was No. 5 giving the conference three teams ranked in the top 5. Texas Tech checked in at No. 8 with Kansas at No. 16 and Oklahoma State at No. 22.
The first Harris Poll of the 2008 season was also released on Sunday. The BCS standings formula consists of three components, each weighted equally: the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive College Football Poll and an average of six computer rankings (Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe). The first BCS standings will be released October 19.
