NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team returned home Wednesday evening and rallied in front of a crowd of 559 to come from behind and defeat Missouri, 3-1. The Sooners (6-4, 2-0 Big 12) dropped the first set, 25-22, and rallied to take the next three from the Tigers (5-5, 0-1 Big 12), 25-22, 25-15 and 25-21.
“Some of our hitters were off this evening, but they did a very good job of blocking, serving and defending the ball,” said OU head coach Santiago Restrepo. “The ideal situation would be for everyone to be on, but it's our first conference win at home and that's excellent. Losing the first set is a bad habit. The team uses it to assess the opponent and that will come back to hurt us at some point.”
Redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu led OU with a team-high 13 kills. Ekwerekwu added five total blocks on the evening. Junior Bridget Laplante added nine kills, while freshman Caitlin Higgins contributed eight.
In a strong defensive matchup, the Sooners tallied 102 total digs on the evening. Senior Lacy Barnes tallied a career-high 22 digs, while Laplante also added 22. Higgins added a season-high 21 digs. Junior Taylor Harbster was the fourth Sooner to total double-digit digs with 13 on the night.
Freshman setter Brianne Barker led the team in assists with 38 and had the highest hitting percentage on the team at.462.
The Tigers were led in the scoring column by Julianna Klein, who posted a match-high 16 kills. Caitlyn Vann was the top defensive player for the Tigers with another match high of 33 digs.
Oklahoma returns to action this weekend, facing Texas A&M in a 2 p.m. contest Sunday from College Station.
