NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team opened its fall season with victories at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., Friday.
Three Sooners joined three players from the University of Arkansas to form a team, producing a 3-1 record on the first day. Ionut Beleleu defeated John Waters in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, while George Chanturia took down Jason Hill, 6-3, 6-4. Chase Miller was defeated by Owen Bullard,6-4, 6-3, in his first match as a Sooner.
Beleleu and Chanturia also defeated Navy's Nick Birger and Jason Hill 8-5. Miller and Arkansas's Matt Walters also took home a doubles victory by defeating Marcus Rebersak and Jarrad Smoke in a tiebreaker 9-7.
The Sooners will face Maryland Saturday afternoon.
At the Costa Mesa Pro Futures Classic in Costa Mesa, Calif., ITA No. 22-rated Andrei Daescu cruised to victory in his season-opening match 6-1,6-1, over Henry Landes.
