DALLAS -- The Inaugural 4Kay Golf Classic presented by Nike took place Monday, Sept. 8, at the Cowboys Golf Club. Aimed at raising funds and awareness for the WBCA/Kay Yow Cancer Fund and creating an enjoyable atmosphere for many of college basketball's elite coaches and colleagues, the event was a smashing success.
Over 150 coaches, friends and colleagues joined forces to raise funds for women's cancers research through the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation. Those in attendance shared tons of laughter, special moments and a few tears as they showed their support for N.C. State head coach Kay Yow as she faces her third bout with breast cancer.
“The inaugural 4Kay Golf Classic was a tangible reflection of the solidarity of women's basketball coaches across this country when it comes to finding a cure for cancer,” OU head coach and WBCA president Sherri Coale said. “Buoyed by the indefatigable spirit of Coach Yow, we descended upon Dallas and raised a nice sum of money for the fund while pledging to continue the efforts of the Pink Zone on our home campuses this February.”
Among the attendees were OU's Coale, Connecticut's Geno Auriemma, Tennessee's Pat Summitt, Kansas' men's head coach Bill Self, Minnesota's Tubby Smith, former Texas women's head coach Jody Conradt, hall of fame player and current ESPN broadcaster Nancy Lieberman and The V Foundation CEO Nick Valvano.
Several LPGA players teed off at the event as well, including Anna Acker-Macosko, Kristi Albers, Laurie Brower, Beth Daniel, Jennifer Gleason, Kate Golden, Betsy King, Steph Louden, Hillary Lunke, Meg Mallon, Barb Muscha, Judy Rankin, Amy Read, Kristen Samp, Sherri Turner, Colleen Walker, Wendy Ward, Heather Young.
Coale's group -- partnered with new LPGA pro and former TCU star Stacy Bieber, OU director of operations Guy Austin, Tony McKaig of Norman and Tim Cargile of Tulsa -- placed one stroke out of the prizes in fourth with a 13-under 59.
McKaig also earned the men's “closest to the pin” prize.
Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair and his foursome, including associate head coach Vic Schaefer, placed first in best ball scoring. The group led by TCU head coach Jeff Mittie was second and the quartet of broadcasters Debbie Antonelli and Beth Mowins and head coaches Gail Goestenkors of Texas and Joanne Boyle of California took third.
“The course was beautiful, the camaraderie was special,” added Coale, “but the cause is what drew us there. And it's the reason we'll go back.”
