NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma dropped a close 3-2 decision to the 10th-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at McCasland Field House. The match closed out the 2008 Sooner Legends/Nike Invitational. Oklahoma falls to 1-2 on the young season, while the Mustangs improve to 2-1. Redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu earned all-tournament team honors for her performance on the weekend.

Ekwerekwu led the offensive attack against the Mustangs with 16 kills. She also posted two block solos for 18 points on the day. Junior Bridget Laplante added 15 kills and led the team with 21 digs. Freshman Brianne Barker tallied 38 assists on the day.

Sophomore Chrissy Disarro ended her impressive weekend with 4.5 blocks against Cal Poly. Disarro added seven kills for the Sooners. OU had 10 team blocks.

Kylie Atherstone led the Mustangs with 19 kills, while Hailey Fithian contributed 58 assists and totaled 20 digs. Gaby Rivera also added 15 kills for Cal Poly.

OU dropped the opening set, 16-25, and rallied to win the second 25-19. Following a tie at two, Oklahoma led the rest of the way, jumping out by as much as six. OU gained the lead early in the third set and held on for a slim 25-22 advantage at the break. OU needed just one set win to take the match, but the Mustangs responded in the fourth set, taking a 25-16 win to force a fifth set. In the final set, the two teams traded the lead twice and tied a total of five times. Cal Poly reached the eight-point marker first and from there fended off the Sooner attack to take the set 15-11 and the match, 3-2.

Ekwerekwu led the team with 36 kills during the two-day event. Laplante added 33. In her first three matches as a Sooner, Barker totaled 97 assists. Disarro tallied 18 blocks on the weekend. In addition to Ekwerekwu, Atherstone and Rivera represented Cal Poly on the all-tournament team. Jenilee Rathje (Michigan State) and Emily Stockman and Mary Elizabeth Hooper (Wichita State) were also named to the team. Kelly Broussard was named most valuable player after leading the Shockers to the tournament title with a 3-0 record.

OU returns to action at the Trojan Invitational, Sept. 4-6 in Los Angeles, Calif. The Sooners face fourth-ranked Southern California, San Diego and Hofstra during the three-day event at the Galen Center.
