BEIJING, China — Former University of Oklahoma star Laverne Jones-Ferrette kept her hopes for Olympic glory alive Monday night in Beijing, advancing from the first round of the women's 200-meter dash. Competing for the Virgin Islands, Jones-Ferrette covered the distance in a time of 23.12, the fourth-best time in the event's sixth heat, to qualify for Tuesday morning's second round, slated to begin at 6 a.m. CST.
Ukraine's Natalie Pyhyda took first in Jones-Ferrette's heat, equaling a personal best with a time of 22.91. Jamaica's Sherone Simpson was second in 22.94 while Cuba's Roxana Diaz edged Jones-Ferrette at 23.09. Muna Lee of the United States posted the round's fastest time, 22.71.
Jones-Ferrette has a personal-best time of 22.52 in the event, run on April 7, 2007.
