NORMAN, Okla. - Throughout the summer, SoonerSports.com will bring fans weekly updates of current Sooners competing in the numerous summer baseball leagues around the country.
Fans can also access information on former Sooners playing in Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates.
Collegiate Summer Leagues
In the Texas Collegiate League, Trey Sperring leads the Brazos Valley Bombers with a .375 hitting average after two games. He hit two home runs and drove in four runs in Wednesday's 8-7 loss to Coppell. He is joined by fellow Sooner Chad Colbert in the Bombers' lineup.
Four Sooners will begin play in the Cape Cod League on June 13. Thos players include Aaron Baker and Chase Anderson (Warhem Gatemen), Jamie Johnson (Bourne Braves), and JT Wise (Harwich Mariners).
In the Alaska Baseball League, which begins play this week, Matt Haraughty and Antwonie Hubbard will play for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. Michael Rocha and Jeremy Erben will play for the Mat-Su Miners.
Other Sooners playing around the country include: Garrett Buechele (Palm Springs-West Coast League), Doug Buser (Kitsap- West Coast League), Elliott Blair (Lodi-Northern California League), and Bryant Hernandez (Lodi-Northern California League).
Major League Sooners
David Purcey was the latest Sooner to be called up to the Majors in 2008. Purcey's first appearance for the Toronto Blue Jays came in a start against the Phillies on April, 18th. In his debut, he pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing just two runs on one hit.
Other Sooners playing in Major League Baseball in 2008 include: Jason Bartlett (Tampa Bay Rays), Greg Dobbs (Philadelphia Phillies), Geoff Geary (Houston Astros), Greg Norton (Atlanta Braves)and Reggie Willits (LAA Angels).
In the Minors, two Sooners have put together impressive 2008 campaigns.
Daniel McCutchen made his debut in the Triple-A International League for the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees on May 24. McCutchen has started four games and pitched through 23 1/3 innings with 17 strikeouts.
Ryan Rohlinger moved to Class A Advanced League for the San Jose Giants. Rohlinger is batting .296 with 72 hits and 41 RBIs through 64 games.
