Mueller, Dye Pace OU in Lincoln

NORMAN, Okla. - The 14th-seeded University of Oklahoma women's golf team posted a second-round 303 (+15) at the NCAA Championships West Regional in Lincoln, Calif., leaving the Sooners in a tie for 15th place with San Jose State with 18 holes to play. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship in Albuquerque, N.M., May 20-23. OU trails Tulsa, which currently holds the coveted eighth-place position, by seven strokes at the 6,338-yard, par-72 Orchard Course at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

"We had a tough day today in getting some momentum going," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "Putting was key today, and we made a lot of par putts. We just didn't make as many birdie putts."

Ellen Mueller continues to lead the Sooners after two days. The freshman from Evansville, Ind., stayed steady with a second-round 74 (+2), putting her in a tie for 13th place at 146 (+2). Mueller finished with 16 pars Friday, the only blemishes on her scorecard being bogeys on holes 12 and 15. She is nine shots out of the lead, held by UNLV's Therese Koelbaek.

Kendall Dye used an eagle on the par-5 10th hole, the second-to-last hole of the day for OU, to accelerate her to an even-par round of 72. The junior from Edmond, Okla., vaulted into a tie for 44th place at 150 (+6) with her Friday performance.

Senior Kelly Jacques, after starting five-over-par through the first six holes, recovered to play the final 12 at even-par, giving her a round of 77 (+5). Jacques' day included a one-under-par 35 on the front nine, featuring a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole. She stands in a tie for 54th at 151 (+7).

Heather Wright carded an eight-over-par 80 on Friday, putting her in a tie for 80th place at 155 (+11). The senior from Houston, Texas, had two birdies on the day.

Sophomore Ryanne Elmer shot a second-round 84, leaving her in a tie for 107th place at 170 (+26). Elmer closed the day with a birdie at the par-3 11th hole.

"The team fought hard, but it didn't show much on the scoreboard," Coach Ludvigson said. "We know we can go low on this course, and plan on doing just that tomorrow. We did many good things today and hopefully we will be rewarded for the mental toughness this team has displayed."

First-round leader USC remained at the top of the leaderboard after shooting an even-par 288 Friday. The Trojans lead second-place UNLV by seven strokes.

OU sits two shots behind 14th-place Oregon, three strokes behind 13th-place Michigan State, and four behind 12th-place BYU.

The Sooners kick off the final round at Lincoln Hills Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CDT.
