NORMAN, Okla. - Ellen Mueller fired a career-best 72 (E) to lead the 14th-seeded Oklahoma women's golf team to an opening-round 299 (+11) Thursday at the NCAA Championships West Regional in Lincoln, Calif. The Sooners, who at one point reached as high as second place, are tied for 12th with Arizona and Ohio State at the 6,338-yard, par-72 Orchard Course at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. OU is just two shots behind 11th-place North Carolina, three back of 10th-place Arizona State, and four strokes out of a tie for sixth place.
"We really did play well, but lost some shots coming in," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "We are excited about tomorrow, and know we can make birdies on this course. Now we just need to eliminate any big holes and finish strong coming in."
Mueller's career day puts her in a tie for 18th place through 18 holes. The freshman from Evansville, Ind., had four birdies on the day, including one on the opening hole. She sits four shots out of the lead held by USC's Paola Moreno and Arizona's Alison Walshe.
Senior Kelly Jacques carded a first-round 74 (+2) to stand in a tie for 39th place. She began with two birdies on the first nine holes en route to a one-under-par 35 on the front. Jacques had just three holes above par on day one.
"Ellen played really steady today, and so did Kelly," Coach Ludvigson said.

"Heather made a tremendous comeback on the last few holes," Ludvigson added.
Kendall Dye carded an opening-day 78 (+6) for the Sooners, a round that included two birdies. The junior from Edmond, Okla., shot even-par on the front nine, but closed with a six-over-par 42 on the back. Dye sits tied for 74th place.
Ryanne Elmer closed out the OU scoring with an 86 (+14) in the first round. The sophomore from Edmond, Okla., is tied for 106th place.
USC, the top seed and No. 1 team in the country in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index, leads the NCAA West Regional after posting a five-under-par 283. The Trojans lead second-place Tulsa by four shots. The Sooners are 16 strokes out of the lead.
"We have a lot to look forward to tomorrow and the next day," Ludvigson said.
OU tees off at 10:30 a.m. CDT Friday to begin second round play.
