LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Oklahoma Sooners (29-19-1, 6-13-1 Big 12) lost another high scoring battle on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 13-10 decision to the Kansas Jayhawks (28-22, 7-13 Big 12) at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Jayhawks hit four home runs in the game to claim the series. Similar to Friday's opener, KU used another big inning as an eight-run fourth was the difference on Saturday.
The Sooners had the tying run on deck in the ninth with two outs and Aljay Davis on first base, but Mike Gosse popped out to left field to end the game.
"The eight run fourth inning really hurt us, and that is too much to overcome," head coach Sunny Golloway said. "Our guys fought back though and that was a good thing to see."
OU starter Jeremy Erben struggled, giving up nine runs on eight hits and left in the third inning. The Sooner bullpen could not hold the KU offense at bay for the second straight day.
The Sooners led 1-0 after the top of the first and never lead again as KU put up 10 runs in the first four innings.
Erben was dealt the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the year. C. J. Blue (three runs, five hits) and Ryan Mottern (one run, one hit) also struggled out of the Sooner bullpen.
The Sooners picked up right where they left off on Friday night, as Jaime Johnson got things started early in the top of the first with a base hit to the shortstop up the middle. The speedy leadoff man beat out the throw for an infield single.
Aljay Davis stepped to the plate with an opportunity to get things rolling for the visitors and he did just that. The senior took advantage of a Kansas offering and ripped a ball to the gap in left center. The ball dropped for a double and in the process pushed Johnson across the plate all the way from first and the Sooners led, 1-0.
The Kansas Jayhawks continued the trend of the series and fired back with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to take the 2-1 lead.
Spencer Selby and Trey Sperring were hit by pitches in back-to-back at bats to begin the fourth. Matt Harughty dug into the batters box and calmly hit a single to left field to load the bases with Tyson Seng coming to bat. The Enid, Okla., native drove a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Selby from third. The run tied the game at two apiece.
KU went right to work in the bottom of the fourth after both teams were held scoreless in the second and third innings. The Jayhawks plated eight runs in the inning off of a home run by Erik Morrison and three doubles, one each by John Allman, Buck Afenir and Ryne Price.
Davis yet again kick started the Sooners in the top half of the fifth with a leadoff infield single. Mike Gosse followed suit with a single to right moving Davis to third. Aaron Baker made it three straight base knocks for OU and drove in Davis with his single.
J.T. Wise pulled the Sooners within four runs after smashing a three-run homer over the left-field wall for his sixth home run of the season. Selby kept the rally alive with a double to right-center to put himself in scoring position with Sperring at the plate. The Cypress, Texas, junior quickly roped a ball down the left-field line for a double to score Selby from second. The inning pulled the Sooners within three runs at 10-7.
Kansas answered by adding one run in the bottom of the fifth extending its lead to 11-7 off a Tony Thompson run-scoring single.
Aaron Baker hit his sixth home run of the season in the top of the sixth, with a shot over the right field wall, just out of the reach of the Jayhawk right fielder. The two-run jack scored Gosse from third and brought the surging Sooners back to within two at 11-9.
Both the Sooners and Jayhawks were held scoreless in the seventh but KU added to its two-run lead with a home run from Casey Larson off of Ryan Mottern. The Jayhawk lead stood at 13-9 after the fourth Kansas homer of the afternoon.
Johnson homered in the bottom of the ninth to bring OU within three runs. The solo home run made the scored 13-10 in favor of Kansas. Davis singled, yet again, to bring Gosse to the plate who flied out to end the game in a Kansas 13-10 win.
The Sooners and Jayhawks are set for the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KOKC 1520 AM.
