Along with Chase Anderson's (4-3) five strikeouts, Wise eliminated two of the five base runners that reached over the final four frames. The OU catcher threw out Willie Rueda, who was trying to steal his 26th base of the season in the seventh, for the third time in the series at second base.
Finally, in the ninth, Wise picked off pinch-runner Taylor Ashby at second base when the Red Raiders were threatening with runners on first and second and nobody out in the final frame.
"Really proud of our players' effort today," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "Our guys' fought hard and you have to tip your cap to both team's pitchers with the wind blowing hard out to right field. We also had some great defensive plays but none were bigger than J.T.'s in the seventh and ninth innings."
After three scoreless innings, the Sooners broke through on Nathan Karns. Spencer Selby was issued a one-out walk and moved to second base on a Willie Rueda error at second base. That brought up Trey Sperring, who doubled to the gap in left center and gave OU a 1-0 lead. Tyson Seng recorded the second out on a strike out and Jamie Johnson followed with a two-out single to bring home Wise.
In the bottom of the fourth, Texas Tech countered and cut the 2-0 lead in half. Jason Seefeld came around to score an unearned run on Monk Kreder's RBI single. Seefeld reached earlier on an error by Sperring at third. The play was originally ruled an out at first base, but was overturned and kept the inning alive.
The Red Raiders used a two-out hit in the bottom of the fifth to tie things up at two runs apiece. Ryan Duke's second walk of the day was costly as Doug Thennis was pushed across home plate on Chris Richburg's single through the left side.
Duke turned in his fifth five-inning outing in as many starts. The freshman allowed two runs, one unearned, on five hits and two walks. Duke also struck out four before giving way to Chase Anderson to begin the sixth inning.
The OU starter's opposition, Nate Karns, also allowed two runs, one unearned, but on four hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings of work. Texas Tech reliever Brian Cloud dropped to 1-2 after allowing the game-winning run in three innings.
Oklahoma put runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to plate the go-ahead run. In the seventh, the Sooners loaded the bases and regained the lead on Wise's single through the left side which scored Gosse. Aaron Baker was also waved home on the base knock but was thrown out at the plate by Thennis in left field.
The Sooners will return to action on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. against No. 7 Wichita State at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman. The game will be televised by Metro Sports Communications and aired on Cox Ch. 7 in Oklahoma City. OU returns to Big 12 play next weekend for a three-game set at Kansas.
"To win a series on the road in the Big 12 conference is never an easy task," added Golloway. "This series win (Texas Tech) is going to be big for us. We have to look towards our next opponent and take each series one at a time."
