NORMAN, Okla. -- Four members of the 2008 NCAA champion Oklahoma men's gymnastics team have qualified to compete in the 2008 Visa U.S. Championships, May 22-24 in Houston, Texas. Seniors Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons and Jonathan Horton, junior Chris Brooks and freshman Steven Legendre will join a field of 45 of the nation's top men's gymnasts to vie for the title of U.S. champion. Also in the field are former Sooners Jamie and David Henderson.
Athletes qualified to the Visa Championships several ways: as a member of the current U.S Senior National Team; the top 14 athletes from the U.S. Men's Qualifier based on the approved points system; 12 athletes from the NCAA National Championships; and by approved petition.
Abdullah-Simmons was one of four athletes to successfully petition the Men's Program Committee, while Brooks and Legendre earned their way based on their performances at the NCAA Championships. Horton qualified automatically as a member of the Senior National Team.
The 2008 Visa U.S. Championships serve as the qualifying competition for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, June 19-22 in Philadelphia, Pa. U.S. champions will also be crowned in the all-around and on all six events and the results will help determine spots on the 2008-2009 U.S. Men's Senior National Team.
