NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (11-12, 1-5) is set to face in-state rival Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tennis Championships on Friday, April 25, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M University campus. First serve is set for noon.
"We gained a lot of confidence with our victory over Nebraska on Sunday and I think we are well prepared for the opportunity in front of us this weekend," head coach Paul Lockwood said.
The Sooners enter the championships as the sixth seed, while Oklahoma State is the No. 3 seed. The Sooners concluded the regular season with a 1-5 mark in conference matches, while the Cowboys tallied a 4-2 record.
"We know that OSU is playing excellent right now but we just faced them within the last week and I think that helps us in preparing for the match this Friday," Lockwood added.
Should the team advance to the quarterfinals, Oklahoma will face the winner of the No. 2 Baylor versus No. 7 Nebraska match on Saturday at 9 a.m. The championship match for the men's teams is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Sooners defeated No. 7 seed Nebraska, 6-1, on senior day for OU on Sunday, April 20, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
OU is led by sophomore Andrei Daescu in No. 1 singles as he finished the regular season with a record of 15-6 and 3-3 in conference. The native of Bucharest, Romania, is ranked No. 32 in the ITA rankings released on April 22.
Daescu and teammate senior Federico Chavarria teamed up as Oklahoma's No. 1 doubles team this season and finished the season with a record 13-7 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 matches. The duo is tied for the No. 49 spot in the ITA doubles rankings.
The Cowboys head into College Station with an overall record of 14-8 and a conference mark of 4-2 and finished tied for second with Texas Tech in the regular season conference standings. A 4-3 win over the Red Raiders in the regular season gave OSU the No. 3 seed at the championships.
The Cowboys are led in singles by No. 3-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov who finished with a 5-1 record at No. 1 singles in conference action. He and teammate Nathan Byrnes completed a flawless Big 12 season at No. 1 doubles, going a perfect 6-0 in conference matches. The Cowboy duo holds the No. 17 spot in the doubles rankings.
All-Championship Stadium Club passes are priced at $30 and All-Championship General Admission is $15. Single Day tickets will only be available at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center Box Office and are available each day of the event.
