The Sooners put together an offensive attack that plated a season-high 22 runs off a season-high 24 hits. The attack was led by Aljay Davis (4-for-5, 4 RBIs), Mike Gosse (4-for-4, 4 RBIs) and Spencer Selby (4-for-4, 7 RBIs). Additionally, each of the OU starters recorded a hit and eight different Sooners drove in a run.
The run total was tied for the second most by an OU team in a Big 12 regular season game and tied the mark set in 2003 against Kansas State (W, 22-6). That game on May 11 was also the last time OU run ruled a Big 12 team during a regular season game.
"Missouri is a good ball team and for us to have lost an extra-inning game to them yesterday and come out and really handily take care of it today, it lets our guys know that we are better than our record indicates," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "But we have to be responsible for where we are in the standings and what has happened to this point. We have to continue to respond and today was the first step in doing something about it."
OU starter Ryan Duke (5-3) made his second start of the week and improved to 5-3 with five innings of work. He struck out five Missouri hitters in his first Big 12 start and held the Tigers to two runs off six hits and two walks.
After a long first inning, Duke benefitted from an abundance of run support as OU took a 3-1 lead after the bottom of the first and plated six runs in the second, five in the third, and six more in the fourth.
The Tigers got to Duke early with a pair of singles in the first, with Aaron Senne connecting for the second base knock to drive in Greg Folgia.
In the bottom of the first, the Sooners responded and gave Duke a two-run cushion. Jamie Johnson led off the game with a double down the left-field line and after moving to third base on Davis' single, both runners scored on Gosse's double to the gap in left.
The Sooners' offense continued to roll in the second inning as they connected for six runs off six hits to chase Missouri starter Ian Berger (3-3) out of the game. OU again led off a frame with a double with J.T. Wise's extra-base hit to left-center field and after a single by Tyson Seng and a walk issued to Jamie Johnson, Davis singled in the first run of the second inning. That prompted the Tigers to go to the bullpen with Ryan Gargano relieving Berger.
Gosse had no trouble against the first Tigers' reliever, roping a double again to the gap in left center field to plate two more Sooner runs. Aaron Baker added a sacrifice fly later in the frame and Trey Sperring singled in two more runs to cap off the scoring in the second.
In the Sooners' third, Matt Harughty, Selby and Sperring all delivered run-scoring singles. For Selby, the second single of the game gave him five RBIs after the third inning. The sophomore drove in seven on the day, marking the most for a Sooner since Chris Ebright had a school-record nine against Oklahoma City in 1987.
The fourth inning was highlighted by Davis' three-run homer to left field. The long ball was the second of the week for Davis and the first of two three-run shots in the fourth inning as Selby delivered his sixth bomb of the season.
Oklahoma handed Berger his third loss of the year after tagging him for seven runs off seven hits in one inning of action.
The Sooners will return to action on Tuesday, April 22 against TCU at 7 p.m. where $.50 hot dogs and cokes will be available while supplies last. OU will also host Southern Nazarene on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before heading to Lubbock, Texas for a three-game set with Texas Tech.
