Vise Named to USAG Hall of Fame

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - University of Oklahoma sophomore gymnast Hollie Vise has been named to the 2008 class of inductees for the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, announced by the organization on Tuesday.

The 2003 World Champion on bars, Vise was a member of the `03 U.S. Women's World Championships Team that claimed the USA's first world team title.

"We are proud to recognize the 2008 inductees for their accomplishments and contributions to gymnastics," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "The Hall of Fame is a great opportunity for us to recognize the people who have been a part of gymnastics' rich history. Congratulations to each and every one of our honorees."

An International Elite gymnast since the age of 11, Vise was a two-time National Champion on bars and balance beam and won a silver medal in the all-around at the same competition on three occasions.

A member of the U.S. National Team for six years, the Dallas, Texas, native won two bronze medals at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Australia.

"It's truly an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the great gymnasts that have come before me" said Vise. "Growing up, these were some of my role models and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with them, as well as the other members of the U.S. World Championships Team, is something I will always cherish."

At the collegiate level, Vise made an immediate impact as a freshman, helping the University of Oklahoma to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships - the highest showing in school history.

Vise's pedigree on beam shone through early, as the freshman scored a 9.8 on the apparatus against Arizona State in her first collegiate competition, earning a spot in the Sooner line-up for the remainder of the year.

Vise was steady on beam all season, scoring 9.8 or above five times in 2007. She followed a then-personal best 9.85 against Pittsburgh by recording the Sooners' second-best beam score at the 2007 Big 12 Championships (9.825). Unfazed by the pressure of competing in the NCAA Championships, Vise scored a 9.8 on beam to close her freshman campaign.

After her extensive summer training regime, Vise has found a spot in the bars and beam rotations as a sophomore. Vise has been named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week on three occasions in 2008, winning five event titles on the year. The sophomore took home the bars title in last week's victory over Texas Woman's University after a career-high-tying 9.875 while earning a share of the beam title with teammate Kiara Redmond-Sturms (9.825). It marked the second time this season that Vise had won multiple events during the same competition.

"This is truly one of the top honors that a U.S. gymnast can receive and we are thrilled for Hollie," said head coach K.J. Kindler. "She is very deserving of this honor and we are happy to see her recognized for all of her hard work and dedication throughout her career."

The daughter of Eddie and LeeAnn, Vise is majoring in Human Relations at OU.

The 2008 USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame luncheon and induction ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 22, at the Philadelphia (Pa.) Marriott Downtown.

Vise and the Sooners return to competition this Friday in welcoming No. 11 Auburn to the Lloyd Noble Center for Senior Night at 7 p.m. One lucky OU student will win a $1,000 scholarship that will be deposited directly into their bursar account.
