NORMAN, Okla. -- Junior C.J. Blue pitched a season-high seven innings to improve to 5-0 as OU topped visiting UT-Arlington, 6-5, on Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners are unbeaten in 10 mid week games this season and improved to 18-7-1 overall while the Mavericks fell to 7-16.
The Sooners held a 5-2 lead after seven innings, but the Mavericks narrowed the gap with a single run in the eighth and two runs in the ninth off a homer by Michael Choice.
Despite the late rally and a season-high six errors, the Sooners improved to 11-3 at home and Jake McCarter picked up his Big 12-leading seventh save of the season.
"It was an ugly win, but a win is a win," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "Our players fought hard, didn't give up and did what they needed to do to win the ball game."
In his fifth start of the season, Blue earned his team-leading fifth win of the season. Blue was effective limiting UTA to three unearned runs on seven hits and zero walks.
"C.J. has been great for us in mid week games," said Golloway. "Despite the defensive mistakes, he played his game and fought for seven innings and the win."
After the Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a pair of OU errors, the Sooners rallied with two runs in the second inning on UTA's first error of the game. With the bases loaded and one out, Jamie Johnson laid down the bunt which resulted in a throwing error by UTA first baseman David McLeod and two unearned Sooner runs.
UTA battled back to tie the game at two runs apiece on another Sooner error and a double by Choice in the third inning. But the tie score was short lived with the Sooners countering with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. OU regained the lead on Aaron Baker's two-run home run, his second of the season and second in as many games. Baker drove the 3-2 pitch over the fence in right field off UTA starter Drew Clementz (0-1) and plated J.T. Wise, who connected for a two-out double one batter earlier.
The Sooners never relinquished the lead from there, adding an insurance run in the fourth inning and plating another in the eighth frame.
Aljay Davis finished the night with a game-high two hits and Mike Gosse extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the eighth inning.
The Sooners' eight-game home stand continues with a three-game set against No. 20 Baylor this weekend. The Big 12 series is the first at home for Oklahoma and it begins with a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and will conclude Sunday at 1 p.m.
