NORMAN, Okla. - On a windy Monday in Austin, Texas, Kendall Dye shot a five-over-par 77 to lead the University of Oklahoma women's golf team in the first round of the 18-team Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. The Sooners shot a team score of 320 at the 6,344-yard, par-72 University of Texas Golf Club to put them in a tie for seventh place with Indiana, Iowa State and Missouri through 18 holes.

"The conditions were tough as far as the swirling winds, but we've been working so much on our knockdown shots that I felt like we should have done a little bit better," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "What I saw was a lot of tentative putting. We made a lot of short putts, but we lost a lot of shots on our lag puts."

Dye, a junior from Edmond, birdied four of the final nine holes en route to an even-par back nine. She currently sits tied for 11th place, five shots out of the lead held by Ornella Jouven of Florida.

"Kendall did some really good things today," Ludvigson said. "You take four holes away from her and she's under par."

Senior Kelly Jacques shot an 80 for the Sooners, junior Staci Smoot fired an 81, freshman Ellen Mueller carded an 82 and senior Heather Wright finished with an 84 to round out the Sooner scoring. Jacques sits in a tie for 33rd place, Smoot is tied for 43rd, Mueller stands tied for 52nd and Wright is in a tie for 66th.

"We didn't make smart decisions on some holes," Ludvigson said. "We have a lot of improvements to make, but also looking at the scoreboard right now, we're not that far out of it for really not having a good day."

The Sooners are just one shot behind sixth-place Nebraska, three behind fifth-place Notre Dame and nine strokes back of fourth-place Arkansas.

"Our goal going into tomorrow is trying to work on our confidence on putting, being a little bit smarter about some of our shot making on a few holes, and hitting some knockdown shots and trusting it," Ludvigson said. "We need to make good decisions and not be greedy. On this golf course under these conditions, you have to take your par and run. Sometimes even bogey is a good score."

Second-round play is tentatively set to begin Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT. Stay tuned to SoonerSports.com for the latest weather updates involving tee times.
