NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 39 University of Oklahoma women's golf team travels south of the Red River March 17-19 for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. Eight Big 12 Conference schools are participating in the 54-hole tournament, which begins with 18 holes Monday at the par-72, 6,344-yard University of Texas Golf Club.
"It is business as usual, we will try to just beat all the teams in the tournament and try to not concentrate on Big 12 teams," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "Our main focus is on what we need to do, and who we have to beat to improve our national standing."
The Sooners won two tournaments in the fall season, but have finished tied for 11th in the first two tournaments of the spring. They are looking to get back to their winning ways, starting this week.
"For us to get back into the win column, we need all top four players to play consistently, plus have our fifth player shooting lower scores," Ludvigson said. "It is really our fourth and fifth spots that could really make the difference."
OU finished seventh in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational a year ago, and Ludvigson sees no reason why that shouldn't improve at this year's tournament.
"I think the course sets up for smart golf and a lot of short game shots like bump and runs, which is our strong suit." she said.
The Big 12 schools joining the Sooners this week in Austin include Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska and the host University of Texas. Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Ohio State, SMU, TCU and Wisconsin complete the field of 17.
"Our expectation will be to finish in the top five as a team and have two individuals vying for the top spot," Ludvigson said. "They feel good and confident, and are ready to go. We will be making a lot of notes on this course because of the regional championship being held there in May. So we are using this time to learn more about the course as well."
