SACRAMENTO, Calif.  - OU pitcher D.J. Mathis threw a career-high 12 strikeouts, but the No. 8 Oklahoma softball team fell to California, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in Capital Classic action in Sacramento, Calif.

The loss moved the Sooners to 24-7 overall and 3-1 in Capital Classic action while Cal improved its record to 24-9 and 4-0 in tournament action this weekend.

Mathis recorded only her third loss of the season as she fell to 16-3 after giving up two runs on three hits.  While Mathis struck out 12, she also walked six in six innings of work.  Mathis' previous high in strikeouts was nine.

Offensively, the Sooners struggled against Cal pitcher Marissa Drewrey, who threw the complete game shutout.  Drewrey only allowed three this and struck out three while walking three.  The Cal starter improved her record to 12-4.

Oklahoma only had three hits, but also had missed opportunities as it stranded eight runners on base.  Cal also stranded eight runners but took advantage in the bottom of the third where it scored its only two runs of the game.

The Sooners had opportunities in the third as Legendre led off and reached on an error by the Cal second baseman.  Following a Savannah Long strikeout, Haley Anderson, pinch running for Legendre, stole second.  Krystle Huey followed that with a slap single up the middle as OU had runners at the corners and no outs.  Next, Huey stole second to put two Sooners in scoring position.  Amber Flores followed that with a deep fly out to center field, but Anderson didn't tag up in time as OU wasn't able to plate a run.  Samantha Ricketts ended the inning with a fly out to centerfield.

Cal led off the bottom of the third with two straight walks.    On the next play, Cal stole third base so the Bears had runners at the corners and no outs.  Following a Mathis strikeout, Cal's Gina Leomiti put down a sac squeeze bunt that scored Cal's first run of the game.  With a runner at second and two outs, Bernice Masaniai ripped an RBI single up the middle to push the OU lead to 2-0.  Mathis struck out the next batter to end the inning, but Cal owned the 2-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth.

In the fourth, Traci Dickenson led off with a walk and two outs later, Wendy Trott ripped an infield single as OU had runners at first and second.  However, Jessica Legendre flew out to left field to end the top of the fourth.

Cal threatened again in the fourth as Cal's Vernae Sevilla notched a single to left field with one out.  Following a Mathis strikeout, Shannon Houston was hit by a pitch and the next batter walked to load the bases for the Bears.  However, Mathis stayed calm and struck out the next batter to end the inning.

With one out in the sixth, Lindsey Vandever gave the Sooners a base runner as she reached on an error by the second baseman.  However, OU couldn't take advantage as the next two batters were retired.

The Sooners had one last chance in the top of the seventh as Legendre stepped to the plate.  The junior third baseman fouled out to right field for the first out of the inning.  Next, Savannah Long flew out to centerfield for the second out.  Pinch hitter Chana'e Jones stepped to the plate, but struck out to end the game.

The Sooners round out Capital Classic action on Sunday with an 11 a.m. (CT) contest against Princeton.
