NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's Jonathan Horton finished in fifth place Saturday at the Tyson American Cup at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  The two-time defending champion at the event, Horton was trying to become the first men's gymnast to win three straight American Cup titles since the USA's Blaine Wilson (1997-1999).

2004 Olympic all-around gold-medalist Paul Hamm won the men's competition with a 94.400 total, followed by U.S. national squad teammate Alexander Artemev (91.150).

Japan's Hisashi Mizutori, whom Horton edged to claim the 2006 American Cup crown, finished third with a 90.950, while Bo Lu of China was fourth (90.200).

Horton finished with a final total of 89.600.  He was the runner-up to Hamm on the floor exercise with a score of 15.350, and also placed third on the parallel bars (15.750) and fourth on rings (15.800).

Falls on the pommel horse (13.500) and high bar (13.850) and a missed landing on vault (15.350) however, derailed his bid for the "three-peat."

Horton will rejoin his OU teammates this week as the third-ranked Sooners visit No. 7 Ohio State on March 8.  The meet is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CST) start inside St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
