NORMAN, Okla. - Led by senior Heather Wright's 1-under-par 71, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot a final round score of 295 (+7), its third-best 18 holes of the season. The Sooners finished in a tie for 11th place at the 18-team Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Only four teams had a lower score than OU Tuesday at the par-72, 6,168-yard Coco Beach Resort.
"We did so much better today because we hit more greens and made more putts," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "I was thrilled to see Kelly (Jacques) and Heather (Wright) shoot lower scores, and Ellen was back on her game today as well."
Senior Kelly Jacques once again recorded the best finish for the Sooners, tying for 12th at 221 (+5). Her final round 73 marked her low round of the spring season.
Wright's 71 boosted her into a tie for 21st at 223 (+7). She carded the low round for the Sooners on the final two days after beginning with a 79 in Sunday's opening round.
Freshman Ellen Mueller finished with a final round 75 to place in a tie for 66th at 233 (+17). Junior Kendall Dye and sophomore Ryanne Elmer tied for 74th with scores of 237 (+21). Dye fired a 76 on Tuesday, while Elmer finished with an 80.
OU finished seven shots behind 10th-place Florida State, and five shots ahead of N.C. State. The Sooners were tops among the three Big 12 teams competing, besting Texas Tech (14th) by nine strokes and Iowa State (17th) by 27 shots.
"Our goal was to get ahead of Texas Tech, N.C. State and Michigan, and we conquered that goal," Ludvigson said. "This was a good round to help our overall confidence and momentum."
The Sooners return to action March 17-19, as they head south of the Red River to Austin, Texas, for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.
