Jacques Leads Sooners in Round One

NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Kelly Jacques shot an opening-round 74 (+2) to lead the Sooners as they carded a score of 308 (+20) on day one of the 18-team Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The No. 34 OU women's golf team stands in a tie for 14th with N.C. State through 18 holes at the par-72, 6,168-yard Coco Beach Resort.

"Obviously we didn't play how we wanted to, but overall the team fought hard and is fired up for tomorrow," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "The two areas we need to concentrate on are hitting enough club into the wind and eliminating the big holes."

Jacques equaled the low round of the spring for Oklahoma with her 74, putting her in a tie for 17th with 36 holes to play. She is six shots behind leader Stacy Lewis of Arkansas (68, -4) and just two shots out of the top 10.

Freshman Ellen Mueller fired her low round of the spring with a 76 (+4), and sits in a tie for 38th place.

Together in a tie for 69th place are senior Heather Wright and sophomore Ryanne Elmer, who shot first round scores of 79. Elmer is playing in her second event of 2007-08 and her first of the spring season.

Junior Kendall Dye posted a score of 82 and is tied for 86th with four other golfers.

The Sooners are six strokes behind Michigan and Texas Tech, which are tied for 12th, and 15 shots out of TCU and Alabama's lead in a tournament that has nine teams within six of the leaders after one round. OU is five shots clear of 16th-place Wisconsin.

"We have many goals for tomorrow, one of those being to hit more greens as a team," Ludvigson said. "Our average was low today. The team is ready to put a low score on the board, and hopefully we can post the low score tomorrow."

The second 18 holes will be played tomorrow, with a shotgun tee time of 7 a.m. CT.
