OU Adds Four All-Americans in 2008

December 16, 2008 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- Sophomore defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and junior tight end Jermaine Gresham (Ardmore, Okla.) joined sophomore quarterback Sam Bradford (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and senior offensive guard Duke Robinson (Atlanta, Ga.) as All-Americans for OU in 2008.

The 2008 season marked the seventh time in Bob Stoops' 10 years at Oklahoma that the Sooners have produced multiple All-Americans in the same season. Oklahoma has now produced 148 First Team All-Americans overall since Claude Reeds first earned the honor in 1913. Under Coach Stoops, 28 Sooners have earned All-America honors.

The NCAA officially recognizes the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America teams in determining consensus and unanimous selections. A consensus All-American is determined per the NCAA by a system awarding three points for a first-team honor, two points for a second-team selection and one point for a third-team selection. A unanimous All-American is a player named first-team on all five teams.

For 2008, both Sam Bradford and Duke Robinson gained consensus recognition.

In addition to the Sporting News, Sam Bradford was honored by the Associated Press, ESPN, CBS and Rivals as a first-team selection. Oklahoma's fifth Heisman Trophy winner was named Offensive Player of the Year by CBS.

Duke Robinson claimed first-team honors from the Sporting News, Associated Press, FWAA and Walter Camp. The senior repeated as a consensus All-American after garnering honors from the Associated Press, FWAA and Sporting News during the 2007 season.

Four other Sooners earned All-America mentions: Jon Cooper, Nic Harris, Phil Loadholt and DeMarco Murray. Senior center Jon Cooper was honorable mention by Sports Illustrated while senior safety Nic Harris was third-team by the Associated Press and honorable mention by Sports Illustrated. Senior offensive tackle Phil Loadholt was first-team by Sports Illustrated and Rivals, second-team by Sporting News and third-team by the Associated Press. Junior running back DeMarco Murray was honorable mention by Sports Illustrated.
