BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Colorado on Wednesday evening at the Coors Events/Conference Center. The Sooners (12-16, 8-12) fell 26-24, 25-22 and 25-23 to the Buffaloes (13-15, 7-12 Big 12).
Freshman Suzy Boulavsky led OU with 11 kills on the evening. Sophomores Francie Ekwerekwu and Sarah Freudenrich added eight kills each. Defensively, senior Lacy Barnes led the Sooners with 19 digs, while junior Laplante added eight. Freshman Brianne Barker led the Sooners with 32 assists. Ekwerekwu led the team with a .300 hitting clip. As a team, OU out-blocked the Buffs 7-6. Freudenrich led the way with four total, including one block solo. Laplante also tallied one block solo and a block assist. Barker added three block assists.
Colorado was led by Emilee Sisco's 14 kills and Amber Sutherland added 13 for the Buffs. Callie Webster led CU with 19 digs and Kaitlyn Burkett tallied 43 assists. Lauren Schaefer had four block assists for the Buffs.
In the opening set, Oklahoma led 3-0 before Colorado answered to go up 5-4. The Buffs never relinquished the lead, allowing the Sooners to tie the match seven times. The Sooners tied the set for a final time at 24-all following a CU attack error, but the Buffs dropped two straight kills to take the set in extra points, 26-24. The second went back-and-forth 11 times. OU's largest lead was a three-point 7-4 advantage early. From there, the two squads kept the set close, trailing each other by no more than two until an OU miscue gave Colorado a three-point 23-20 lead and they held on to win 25-22.
In the final set, Oklahoma trailed until a CU attack error gave the Sooners their first lead at 12-11. After both teams kept the score close, Boulavsky's kill gave OU an 18-16 advantage. The Buffs responded to tie the set at 20-all and regained the lead 21-20 after an OU attack error. Colorado built a buffer and held off Oklahoma to take the set 25-23 and sweep the match.
