NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team defeated visiting Baylor, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at McCasland Field House. The Sooners (10-12, 6-8 Big 12) fell 27-25 in the first set before bouncing back to take the second 25-13 and third 25-12. The Bears (14-9, 6-7 Big 12) responded by winning the fourth 25-22 before OU won the duel in the fifth, 15-13.
Redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu led the scoring attack for the Sooners with a season-high 17 kills. Ekwerekwu also totaled a career-high eight block assists and hit .289 on the afternoon.
Freshmen Brianne Barker and Caitlin Higgins recorded double-doubles for the Sooners. Barker tallied her 12th with season-highs in assists (52) and digs (20). For Higgins, it marked her 11th double-double of the year. She hit .217 with 13 kills and 20 digs. Higgins also added a block solo and block assists.
Freshman Suzy Boulavsky and sophomore Sarah Freudenrich added double-digit kills with 12 each. Boulavsky also had a season-high six block assists. Freudenrich had five total blocks with one block solo and four block assists. Junior Bridget Laplante added 19 digs, while senior Lacy Barnes led the team with 25.
Katie Sanders led the Bears with 17 kills and 22 digs. Four other Bears tallied double digit digs. Taylor Barnes led Baylor with 40 assists and Ashley Byrd led the team with five block assists.
As a team, the Sooners had 14 total blocks compared to the Bears' seven. OU also tallied 99 digs on the afternoon and 65 kills. Oklahoma hit .200 during the duration of the match.
The Sooners return to action Wednesday evening, facing 16th-ranked Kansas State in Manhattan at 7 p.m. CST.
