Oklahoma Solidifies Hold on No. 1

October 05, 2008 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma solidified its hold on the No. 1 spot in the major polls announced Sunday afternoon. The Sooners had 51 of 65 first-place votes in the AP, 60 of 61 in the Coaches and 106 of 114 in the Harris Poll.

It marked a record 97th week as the No. 1 team in the AP poll overall for the Sooners since the service began in 1936. No other team has been ranked No. 1 more than Oklahoma. Five Big 12 Conference teams joined the Sooners in the poll: Missouri at No. 3, Texas at No. 5, Texas Tech at No. 7, Kansas at No. 16 and Oklahoma State at No. 17. OU battles the Longhorns next Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Six Big 12 teams were also ranked in the latest coaches poll. After No. 1 Oklahoma, Missouri moved up to No. 2 after a 52-17 blowout at Nebraska. Texas was No. 5 giving the conference three teams ranked in the top 5. Texas Tech checked in at No. 7 with Kansas at No. 15 and Oklahoma State at No. 17.

The second Harris Poll of the 2008 season was also released on Sunday. Oklahoma amassed 106 of 114 first-place votes in the poll. The BCS standings formula consists of three components, each weighted equally: the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Harris Interactive College Football Poll and an average of six computer rankings (Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe). Initial BCS standings will be released Oct. 19.
