 Breast Cancer Fact Sheet

•  Breast cancer may occur in men. Men at any age may develop breast cancer, but it is usually detected (found) in men between 60 and 70 years of age. Male breast cancer makes up less than 1% of all cases of breast cancer.

•  It is estimated that there will be 182,460 new cases of breast cancer within females in 2008, while the NCI estimates 1,990 new cases within males.

•  The NCI also estimates 40,480 deaths this year for females with breast cancer and 450 for males with the disease.

•  Based on rates from 2003-2005, 12.03% of women born today will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast at some time during their lifetime. This number can also be expressed as 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast during their lifetime.

•  On January 1, 2005, in the United States there were approximately 2,477,847 women alive who had a history of cancer of the breast.

•  Women 40 and older should have mammograms every 1-2 years. Women who are at higher than average risk of breast cancer should talk with their health care providers about whether to have mammograms before age 40 and how often to have them.

•  Set to open in 2010, the OU Cancer Institute is on track to become Oklahoma's first and only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Achieving this designation, the gold standard for cancer research and care in the United States, means that Oklahomans will no longer need to travel 450 miles out of state for comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care.

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma volleyball team hosts the second-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in McCasland Field House. OU (8-11, 4-7 Big 12) looks to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Huskers (19-0, 10-0 Big 12) earlier this season.

The Sooners are sponsoring Breast Cancer Awareness Night and are asking all fans to wear pink. The first 250 through the door receive a pink pom pom. All fans who wear pink are eligible to win a $100 gift card courtesy of Circle K.

Oklahoma went 1-1 last week, defeating Colorado 3-0 before falling at Kansas, 3-1. The Sooners had an open date on Wednesday. Middle blocker Sarah Freudenrich was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week for her efforts during the two-game stretch. The Broken Arrow, Okla. native is the first OU volleyball player to earn a weekly honor this year and the fifth in school history.

In the previous meeting on Oct. 8, OU battled but was unable to upset the Huskers, who won in straight sets in front of a sold out crowd of 4,091 at Nebraska Coliseum. The Sooners fell 25-16, 25-19 and 25-14. All four of Oklahoma's four true freshmen saw playing time. One of those freshmen, Caitlin Higgins, led OU with her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs.

OU hits the road Wednesday evening to face third-ranked Texas in Austin at 7 p.m. CT.
