A Crossroad Awaits for Davis

  Senior DE Alan Davis
NORMAN, Okla. -- Scholarship football players at the University of Oklahoma generally have aspirations of being drafted into the National Football League.

The harsh reality is that very few people actually get that chance.

Senior defensive end Alan Davis knows all too well that his football playing days may soon be coming to an end. Davis can see from the start of his senior season at Oklahoma that a personal crossroad awaits when the last Sooner game in the 2008 campaign has been played.

"My parents always told me not to put my eggs in one basket as I was growing up. As much I as I would love to make it to that next level, I realize that I may not and I need to have something to fall back on," Davis said.

"As much as I would

love to make it to that

next level, I realize I

may not and I need

to have something to

fall back on."

When Davis reaches this crossroad, he will reach it with a plan for whichever road presents itself. As much as he wants to play at the next level, the 6-3, 225-pound Davis can rely on the skill and knowledge gained as an OU student in the "real" world.

"The reason I accepted a scholarship was to be able to play football and to receive a quality education. No matter what happens at the end of the year, I will walk away from the University of Oklahoma a winner, both on and off the football field." Davis said.

With a degree in construction science, Davis will open doors to the corporate world away from football. He hopes to own his own contracting company one day.

Davis first realized he wanted to be a contractor when he and his father, Alan I, rebuilt a house on their family farm in Center, Texas. During the project, the duo started virtually from scratch after they had burned down what was left of the existing house.

"I just had such fun re-building that old house. The sense of accomplishment when we were finished made me realize that I might want to do this in the future." said Davis.

"We have always

told our kids to be

proud of everything

that they do," his

father explained.

Davis and his father are very close. As one of the most influential people in his life, Davis's father, Alan I, always has what's best for his kids in the front of his mind.

"We have always told our kids to be proud of everything that they do," his father explained. "Every parent is going to be proud of their kids, but to see where Alan has ended up and the great decisions he has made about his future really makes me very proud," his father continued.

The younger Davis still carries all of that pride with him in everything that he does. In practice, in the classroom or in the game, Davis gives it his all.

"Competition is something that has never scared Alan off. He has always stood out and handled every situation accordingly. He has stuck with the program through certain situations where some kids might just give up and lick their wounds," his father proudly praised.

As a four-game starter last year, Davis brought his pride and determination to the field. Finishing with 23 tackles and one and a half sacks, Davis plans to use last season's success to build on this season.

If Davis has a career season, he may have to put his contracting company on hold and venture down a road that takes him to an NFL training camp.

Davis carries that pride

with him. Whether it

be in practice, in the

classroom or in a game,

Davis gives it his all.

"I want nothing more than to have a chance to prove what I can do among the best players in the world. If I don't make it, then so be it. I just believe if I have a shot, I may be able to open some eyes." said Davis.

Only time will tell if the Colleyville, Texas, native will earn a chance to prove himself at the next level. Until then, Davis will keep preparing for both -- life at the next level and life without football.
