Sooner Profile: Ashley Paris

NORMAN, Okla. -- For most of her life, Ashley Paris has been known as "the other sister". It is not a moniker she necessarily relishes but it is something she has grown accustomed to. After all, it is pretty easy to be overshadowed when your sister was all-everything in high school and has been rewriting the NCAA record books since coming to college.

Throughout her own basketball career, Ashley has done plenty to make a name for herself. She earned All-America recognition each of her four years in high school, including being selected to the McDonald's All-America team after averaging 18 points, 13 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game as a senior.

A dynamic duo on the court, Ashley and Courtney led their team to back-to-back state championships in high school and won four conference titles. They have continued that success here at Oklahoma by sweeping the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles in their first two seasons.

"We knit-pick, fight,

complain about bills and

everything just like all

other siblings do."

Off the court, they have their differences like all siblings do but jealousy is not an issue. Actually the older of the two by two minutes, Ashley has been keeping her younger sibling in check since they began fine-tuning their post moves against one another on an imaginary basket in their mother's kitchen.

Though Courtney has garnered much recognition on the national scene since arriving in Norman, they are both at their best when they are together.

This year, Ashley has significantly increased her production and has been demanding nearly as much attention from opposing teams. She leads the team in field goal percentage and ranks second in scoring and third in rebounding while starting every game for the Sooners this season.

We recently sat down with Ashley to discuss her relationship with her sister and her role on the team.

On how she handles being referred to as "the other Paris sister":
"I wouldn't say I get sick of it but it's not like I love it either. I absolutely love being on the team with her and regardless of where she goes in the country or where I go, the name Courtney Paris is always going to be a national name as far as basketball goes. It doesn't bother me at all. I'm thrilled to have her on my team and I made the choice to be on a team with her. I know that she is going to require much attention, but she requires much attention on the court as well which makes it easier for all of us."

On whether she and Courtney always planned on attending the same school:
"It just kind of happened naturally. We both liked certain schools and had a few different ones but mostly the same. We both just agreed that Oklahoma was the best fit for us individually and together."

On her contributions to the team this season and what has allowed her to be so successful:
"My role coming into this season was just to be more aggressive. That's what I've done and that's how I can contribute to my team. I'm just looking to score more, trying to be more of a threat on offense and defense and just contributing in any way possible."

On growing up with a father who played in the NFL:
"For most of his playing career I was just a little kid so I wasn't around or aware of much of it. Having someone who has been through college athletics and the professional game I think has helped a lot as far as having some experience and knowledge of how it all works and what it's like to accomplish those goals, especially coming from a parent."

On her relationship with her sister off the court:
"We're forced to do a lot together. We knit-pick, fight, argue, complain about bills and everything just like all other siblings do. We're pretty close on and off the court."

On the camaraderie of the team as a whole:
"It's great. We're all young and we gel. We all have the same interests so it's a great atmosphere. It's like you're playing with 11 of your good friends. I love it."

On her personal goals and expectations for the team for the remainder of the season:
"My expectations are just for us to get a lot better and see how far that takes us. I think the Tennessee game earlier this season showed us how far we can get and that we can compete against teams that make it to the Final Four and win national championships every year. Our goal is to fix some loopholes we have and ultimately hopefully get to Tampa."
