CANCUN, Mexico - Oklahoma kicks off the 2008 season south of the border as the team travels to Cancun, Mexico, to compete in the Cancun Classic on Jan. 4. The eight-team collegiate portion of the event features four teams ranked in the preseason GymInfo top-25 poll, led by the Sooners at No. 8.
LSU is ranked 10th, Denver (15th) and West Virginia rounds out the top-25 foes with its 22nd-place ranking.
The event is divided into two sessions with the Sooners competing in the 7:30 p.m. (CST) session on Friday. Competition will take place at the Hilton Cancun Golf & Beach Resort, which is also the Oklahoma team headquarters during the event.
OU's competition session includes Iowa, West Virginia and Wisconsin-Whitewater while Denver, LSU, Minnesota and Texas Woman's University will face off in the opening session.
The Sooners return eight of the 10 members who competed at the 2007 NCAA Championships, including senior Kiara Redmond-Sturms, who garnered All-America accolades in the all-around, floor and vault competition.
Friday's competition marks the season opener for all three squads in OU's session.
