Women's Golf Starts Season Sunday

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team opens its fall season Sunday and Monday, Sept. 9 and 10, at the Badger Women's Golf Invitational in Madison, Wis. The 12-team tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, will be played at the 6,204-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course.
"This course will play long and tough," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "We have a tendency to play better on tough courses. With the length that Kendall Dye and Heather Wright have they should be able to dominate on some of the tougher holes.
"Putting will be a key, as will adjusting to the rough, which will be thicker than what we are accustomed to. This is a good tournament to start with and we think we have the ability to win as a team and have any individual win as well."
Oklahoma returns the No. 4 and 5 ranked players on the school's all-time career stroke average list in Kelly Jacques and Kendall Dye, respectively, as well as senior Heather Wright to headline Ludvigson's roster.

"We are so excited to get started. With Kelly, Kendall and Heather we look to have great leadership. They are ready to play and start off with a bang," Ludvigson said.
"The intensity of these three players comes from past experiences of not putting scores together when it really mattered. They go into this year with passion and a sense of wanting to prove something. They are playing well and have the hunger."
Joining Jacques, Dye and Wright in the opening Sooner lineup will be junior Sydney Lee and true freshman Ellen Mueller. Mueller competed in the 2007 USGA Women's Amateur and Women's Public Links tournaments.
"Having Ellen in the lineup will provide us with a depth of experience that we haven't had from a freshman in a long time," Coach Ludvigson said. "She is calm, confident and cool. She brings such maturity at a young age, but above all is so competitive that she will spark our lineup."
Sophomores Chelsey Collins and Ryanne Elmer will also travel with the team, competing as individuals.
This will be Oklahoma's third consecutive season to appear in the Badger Invitational. Last fall, University Ridge Golf Course was the site of the Sooners' best finish of the season -- a tie for third out of 11 teams. Dye posted a ninth-place individual finish a year ago with a 54-hole total of 232.
The teams will play 36 holes Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. Pairings for Monday's final 18 holes (play will start at 8 a.m.) will be determined by score. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round.
Also competing in Madison will be Central Florida, Drake, Georgetown, Illinois State, Iowa State, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, Samford, SMU, Wisconsin and Xavier.
