NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team won its season-opening tournament Monday after the final round of the Badger Women's Golf Invitational in Madison, Wis., was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Sooners' 36-hole score of 594 (+18) at the 6,204-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course marked the team's 36th tournament championship in school history, its first since winning the 2004 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. OU's first-round team score of 293 ranks as the fifth-best 18-hole score in school history.

"We are very excited about this win," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "Things were going well today but since there was so much rain we couldn't finish. The team played so well and fought for every shot. The mental side of our game is getting so much stronger."

True freshman Ellen Mueller and junior Kendall Dye tied for second with scores of 148 (+4). Junior Kelly Jacques and senior Heather Wright tied for seventh at 149 (+5).

"With Ellen in the lineup we have a consistent and solid group," Ludvigson said. "We still have to work on the short game and hitting greens, but it's a fantastic start for the team."

Sophomore Ryanne Elmer, competing as an individual, tied for 38th place after posting a 171 (+17). Junior Sydney Lee tied for 53rd at +21 after rounds of 81 and 84 (165). Sophomore Chelsey Collins, also playing individually, tied for 61st with a score of 168 (+24).

The medalist was Iowa State's Kendra Hanson, who was playing as an individual. She carded a two-round score of 147 (+3) to win by one over Mueller, Dye, and three others.

The Sooners defeated second-place Iowa State, the lone other Big 12 school participating in the tournament, by 11 strokes.

Oklahoma travels to Boulder, Colo., Oct. 1-2 for its next event, the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invitational.
