Sooners Earn Academic Honors

NORMAN, Okla. - Five members of the Oklahoma women's gymnastics teams earned Academic All-America honors, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches announced late Wednesday.
Haley DeProspero, Ashley Jackson, Brittney Koncak-Schumann, Gina Lesko and Lori Winn were among the 440 gymnasts honored by the NACGC.
As a team, Oklahoma produced a grade point average of 3.20.
"At Oklahoma we place great importance on exceptional academic performance," said OU head coach K.J. Kindler. "These five women represent one-third of our team and have set an example for their peers. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments in the classroom."
Koncak-Schumann, a senior on the Sooners' 2007 squad, was one of 104 student-athletes nominated with a 4.0 GPA. A health and exercise science major, the McQueeney, Texas, native was also named to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America at-large first team for the second consecutive season. At the 2007 NCAA Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, Koncak-Schumann earned first team All-America honors on vault, helping the Sooners to a program-best eighth-place finish.
Winn, a senior from Oklahoma City, owns a 3.63 GPA in human relations.
DeProspero, a native of McKinney, Texas, carries a 3.72 GPA as a zoology/pre-medicine major, while Jackson, from Hudsonville, Mich., has a 3.50 in zoology/biomedical sciences. DeProspero and Jackson combined for nine individual event titles in 2007.
A zoology major from Allen, Texas, Lesko owns a GPA of 3.71.
To qualify for NACGC Academic All-America honors, student-athletes must attain a GPA of 3.5 or better.
