McFarlane Cruises to World Semifinal

OSAKA, Japan - Former Sooner Danny McFarlane cruised through his preliminary heat at the 11th IAAF World Athletics Championships Saturday, winning ahead of American star Kerron Clement.
McFarlane, participating in his seventh World Championships, won the third of five preliminary heats of the 400-meter hurdles in 48.91 seconds, the third best time overall. Only Felix Sanchez (48.70) and Bershawn Jackson (48.87), who finished 1-2 in the fifth heat, ran faster in the first round.
The top-four finishers in each heat plus the next four fastest times advanced to Sunday's semi-final round.
The ageless McFarlane, a 35-year-old Jamaican aiming at qualifying for his third Olympic Games, is four years older than the second oldest athlete in the field, Edivaldo Monteiro.
McFarlane is one of four with Oklahoma ties at the World Championships. Fellow Jamaican Michael Blackwood, U.S. Virgin Islands native Laverne Jones and current OU senior Jacobi Mitchell of the Bahamas all qualified for the meet.
