NORMAN, Okla. -- Freshmen Lauren Alkek (Victoria, Texas) and Whitney Palmer (Plano, Texas) were selected to U.S. National Select Women's Team (Under-23) as announced by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) last week.

The two Sooners, who will join Oklahoma soccer in the fall, are part of the 18-member squad that will play against the U-20 National Select Team from Mexico later this month.  The team will depart the states on July 14 and will play a pair of games against Mexico on July 15 and 17 at sites and times to be determined.

"We are expecting them to have a tremendous impact for us this fall and it looks like the U-23 National Team is expecting the same thing," said OU head coach Randy Evans. "Whitney and Lauren are similar players up front.  They both have tremendous speed, power and determination."

The selections were made after Alkek and Palmer participated in the USASA National Select Training Camp last week at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.  The two Sooners were part of a group of 32 members vying for spots on the national team.

Alkek and Palmer will not only be representing the University of Oklahoma, but also the Big 12 Conference.  The Sooners are the only members from the league and will join teammates from Brigham Young, Marquette, San Diego, Santa Clara, Stanford the University of Southern California, Utah and Wisconsin.

The structure of the USASA Select Teams Program begins at the State Association level, where men's and women's teams are formed from all amateur and eligible players who wish to try-out for their respective National State Association Select Team.  The association is reported to have over 250,000 participants in the United States.  Once formed it sends its Select Team to their respective USASA Regional Select Teams Tournament, which are held in late May to mid June.

Each of the four regions (Texas and Oklahoma play in Region III) within the United States holds its own Regional State Select Teams Tournament. At each tournament players are evaluated by their respective USASA National Coaching Staff and invited to participate in the USASA National Select Training Camp.  The top five players from each region and 12 additional players comprise the 32 athletes at the camp.
