RIO DE JANEIRO - University of Oklahoma junior Jacobi Mitchell finished 16th overall in the 200-meter dash at the 2007 Pan American Games after competing in the first- and semifinal rounds of the event Wednesday.

Mitchell, a native of the Bahamas, ran 21.79 seconds at Stadium Jõao Havelange to place eighth in his semifinal heat. He was the final athlete to advance to the semifinal after placing fourth in his first-round heat at 21.22 seconds.

Brendan Christian (20.33) of Antigua and Barbuda led both the preliminary and semifinal rounds and will be the favorite in Friday's final.

Though Mitchell's individual competition is over, he will continue to play a role for the Bahamas as a member of the team's 4x100-meter relay which takes to the track Friday for qualifying rounds.

Mitchell then heads to Osaka, Japan, to run the same relay at the 11th World Athletics Championships. Qualifying rounds there begin Aug. 31.

OU alum Aldwyn Sappleton also competes at the Pan American Games, representing Jamaica in the 800-meter run.

The preliminary rounds of the 800-meter run are Friday, July 27, with the final Saturday, July 28.

The Pan American Games have been hosted once every four years since 1951 as a competition between national athletes from North American, South American, Central America and the Caribbean. A total of 41 sports will be contested at the 2007 Games.
