NORMAN, Okla. - Former OU volleyball player Laura Tomes and the U.S. National Team earned a bronze medal at the Pan American Games this past week. USA defeated Peru, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-22) in the bronze-medal match at the XV Pan American Games on Thursday at Maracanãzinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Tomes was one of 12 players on the USA Roster for the Pan American Games. A 2006 All-Big 12 selection, Tomes is only the fourth Oklahoma volleyball player in school history to represent the Sooners on a USA National Team. Patrice Arrington, who played o
n the USA National Team in 2005, was the last Sooner to be named to a USA squad. Tomes been training with the team since March 9 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The U.S. Women finished the Pan American Games tournament with a 3-2 record. Brazil played Cuba in the women's gold-medal match on Thursday.
"I am really proud of how our team played throughout the tournament," said Sue Woodstra, who is serving as head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team at the Pan American Games. "I saw great improvement. We have young players getting valuable experience. The Pan American Games was a chance to see them in a great atmosphere and evaluate them."
