NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma has been selected to host the 2008 NCAA Women's Gymnastics South Central Regional as well as the 2008 Big 12 Championship. The conference championship will be held March 29, while the regional is scheduled for April 12. Both events will take place at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.
"I think it's awesome for us to be hosting two of the biggest postseason events of the year," said OU head coach K.J. Kindler. "An NCAA Regional is probably the most pressure-packed competition of the year. We're really excited about having both of these postseason events here in Norman and I know the University will host a first-class event."
OU last hosted an NCAA Regional in 1988 with head coach Becky Buwick's Sooners finishing in sixth place.
"It's a huge step for our program," Kindler said. "Anytime you host a regional you're not traveling, you're not on the road. You have that hometown advantage, the crowd is always a great asset, and we're looking forward to hosting."
This is Oklahoma's fourth time to host the Big 12 Women's Gymnastics Championship. The Sooners also hosted the Big 12 Conference's first championship meet at the Lloyd Noble Center in 1997.
The last time OU hosted the conference finals was 2005 with the Sooners posting a third-place finish.
Tickets for both events will be available through the OU Ticket Office as the 2008 gymnastics season approaches.
Other 2008 Regional hosts include LSU (Central), Minnesota-Twin Cities (North Central), Florida (Southeast) and Oregon State (West). The location of the Northeast Regional has yet to be determined.
Oklahoma finished second at the 2007 NCAA Central Regional hosted by the University of Alabama, making a school-record fourth straight trip to the NCAA Championships.
